Jones Journal for Families november 1, 2019

Principally Speaking

November means Thanksgiving, that time of year when we express gratitude for everything positive in our lives. I am thankful for you, our students and wonderful school! It is a blessing to lead our shining All-Stars!

Although the application window for 2020-2021 is already closed, I wanted to share the promotional video that the AISD communications department created. A big shout-out to Ashlynn and Maya whom are featured in the video!

Thanks to everyone that came to Mathoween Night and Spirit Night at Spring Creek BBQ. We also hope everyone enjoyed the dress up days to Say No to Drugs and the Fall Fun Day & Book Character Day. It's always fun to engage with the community. Please see below about upcoming events. I hope you can attend the PTA general meeting and 1st grade showcase on Nonmember 7 and Family Science Museum Night on November 12. Also, we need your help for our College Career Day on November 22. Please use this form to let us know how you can help. Best Regards, Katiuska Herrador- Principal

AISD Bond 2019

As you know, the AISD is planning to open a junior high fine arts & dual language academy at Gunn Junior High and a high school fine arts & dual language academy at Arlington High School. Renovations and classroom additions to support the program are proposed for both schools as part of the 2019 bond proposition. In addition, there are plans for site improvements at Jones and all AISD schools as part of the bond proposition. Learn more at www.aisd.net/bond2019 EARLY VOTING: Oct. 21-Nov. 1, 2019 | ELECTION DAY: Nov. 5, 2019

Construction Update

We are approaching the final stretch of our expansion project. The new wing of 10 classrooms already opened for Grades 4-6 and they love their new rooms! The new gym will be ready by Thanksgiving time. Following that, we will open the fire and traffic lane that will loop around the entire school. We will inform you in advance when after school dismissal procedures include the use of the new loop. As you can see next door, Arlington Commons Phase 2 is well underway, too. Their construction project as you know impacts Lamar Blvd and Van Buren Drive. Always drive carefully and follow signs and barricades accordingly. We thank you for your continued patience during these projects.

Vocabulary Boosters

A large vocabulary can turn your child into a better reader and writer. Try these everyday ways to help your child learn new words.

Keep your ears open: When you take your child places, point out words that people use. Maybe a waiter describes an entree or the dentist talks about molars. Encourage your child to figure out what the words mean by the way they are used. Then look up the word in Spanish and practice using the word in sentences in both languages!

Go beyond nouns: Help your youngster add adjectives and verbs to their vocabulary. Sports and games offers opportunities to use action words. Let your child hear you comment on how the baseball soars through the air or how the football player sprints to make a touchdown. When you have your child write thank you notes or greeting cards, suggest descriptive words (a polka-dotted shirt, a fantastic birthday, a thrilling party)
