a long way to gO

There is no stopping Fire Stopping.

A fortnight after capturing the NSW title, the Manly 16ft skiff took another giant step towards adding the club championship to its tally with an all-the-way win in last Saturday's third heat.

That made it back-to-back club championship wins for Joe Turner and crew Rob Napper and James Bury.

No wonder they are hot favourites to take out the treble – club, state and national crowns.

"Everything is falling into place for us. That boat is going well and we are sailing well as a crew," Bury said.

"We put in a lot of work over the winter months and we are seeing he benefits of that at the moment.

"It's been a good start but you're only as good as your last race."

With the nationals to be fought out in early January, Fire Stopping is on target to make it a clean sweep of all three major trophies.

Two Manly boats – Brydens (Lee Knapton) and Fluid Building (Clint Bowen) – have achieved the feat in recent years.

"To win the club, state and national in one season would be a massive achievement but we know there is a long way to go," Bury said.

"We've only had two heats of the club champos and the competition will be red-hot at the nationals.

"But we've put ourselves in a good position."

Fire Stopping put itself in a good position from the start of the second heat of the club championship, racing off the line and putting a big gap between it and the rest of the fleet.

By the top mark Turner led by a minute and increased the gap the longer the race went on.

Fire Stopping finished almost four minutes clear of second-placed Fluid Building and Korman Marine Composites (Felix Grech).

Gill (Damon Zemanek) won handicap honours from Altis Consulting (Phil Cooke) and C-Side Surveyors (Jessica Iles).
