May 1st signifies the start of the 2017 Red Bull Cape Fear waiting period. The unique, invitation-only big wave surf event, that last year was held in the heaviest waves ever surfed, is back!

Last year’s event was beyond my wildest imagination and I can hardly wait to see what Mother Nature throws up at Cape Solander this year. Having the 16 surfers from 2016 event and the additional four internationals will make for an unbelievable show. - Mark Mathews Contest Director

If the conditions swing in just right between May 1 and 31 August, surfers will be taking on 8-12 feet monster slab waves at Cape Solander in Sydney. Conditions we're looking for to see perfect Cape Fear are 3 to 4m ESE groundswell with light W to SW winds. Chief surf forecaster Ben Macartney says that in the lead up to calling the event on there are a number of factors:

I'm analysing mean sea levels and pressure for any major storms forming over the Tasman Sea or Southern Ocean. Then I’m assessing potential surf-heights, wave period, wave direction and arrival times - as well as local winds ideal for running Red Bull Cape Fear. - Ben Macartney
