September Media Monthly Hamilton Elementary

Welcome, and welcome back! I am so excited to kick off another great school year in the Library Media Center. Did you know that September is National Library Card Month? What better way to celebrate than by making a trip to your school or local public library and checking out a stack of great books.

We love our library volunteers! If you are interested in helping out in the library media center, use the sign up genius link here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f094eada62ba64-hamilton6

Library volunteers help with checking in books, putting books away on the library shelves, and helping students check new books out. Students love seeing their parents help out in the library. If you have any questions, please email me! LHenderson@troy.k12.mi.us

Birthday Books are Back!

Celebrate your child's birthday in a fun new way - by donating a book to the Hamilton Library. All Hamilton students can participate in this club at any time. How do you join? By picking out a new, hard-cover book to add to the Hamilton collection. You can use our Amazon Wishlist for ideas. http://bit.do/birthdaybook

Bring your new, hard-cover book to the library with the completed form (see link below to download) and we will process the book and add it to the library collection. Each birthday book will have a special bookplate inside commemorating your child's birthday. Members of the birthday book club will receive a special bookmark and pencil which they can keep, and will be the first student to check out their Birthday Book!

Spotlight on Learing

In September, we welcome everyone back to the Library Media Center. Our focus is on reviewing library policies and procedures, then helping students find the best possible books.

Monkey Not Ready for Kindergarten by Marc Brown

Kindergarten: In September we get to know our new Kindergarten friends and learn how to use the library. Our focus is on listening and following directions, but we also share some beautiful books such as Monkey Not Ready for Kindergarten and D. W.'s Library Card by Marc Brown. Students check out their first library book on their second visit to the library. In October, our third lesson together will focus on taking good care of the library and using the "Library Keys" to find the perfect book on the shelf. Our fourth lesson is all about taking good care of our books at school and at home.

The Day You Begin by Jacqueline Woodson

First grade: In September we welcome students back with beautiful picture books. Next, we learn about making just right book choices using the Five Finger Rule featured in Goldisocks and the Three Libearians. First graders get two new privileges on their second visit: they can now check out two books at a time, AND they get to check out from the chapter book collection for the very first time. They are thrilled! In October we will unlock another section of the library: Nonfiction, and for the first time ever our first graders will have the opportunity to check out THREE books at a time! Remember, more books = more reading = better readers!

Second grade: We'll also read some beautiful picture books, and review our library rules and procedures. In our second lesson, second graders play a silly shoe game to remind us of the Five Finger Rule and that we need to find books that are just right for us. In October we will begin learning about how the library is organized, how call numbers work, and we will play Mrs. Henderson's favorite game: "Trick or Treat" where we go looking for books on the shelf and try to find them by call number.

Third, Fourth & Fifth grade: Our first lesson is a Kahoot game to review our library rules and procedures, with a few new book talks to get students excited about the new books that came out over the summer. Next we'll get right to work learning and reviewing Destiny Discover. Students can use Destiny Discover to search the library collection, find books on the shelves, read reviews, place books on hold, and coolest of all: they can read library ebooks on their ipads! We will continue working in Destiny Discover all year long, so this will be ongoing learning. In October we'll learn about all the amazing things we can do with our TPL eCards, such as ebooks and audiobooks on Overdrive, TrueFlix & FreedomFlix, and more.
