William Shakespeare by Bryanna Brown

-There are no real records of when he was born, but we do now that he was baptised on April 26, 1564. William was the third child of John Shakespeare, a leather merchant, and Mary Arden, a local landed heiress.
Before William’s birth, his father became a successful merchant and held official positions such as alderman and bailiff, an office resembling a mayor. William got married at age eighteen to Anne Hathaway, who was seven or eight years older than him.
Together, they had two daughters: Susanna, who was born in 1583, and Judith (whose twin brother died in childbirth) was born in 1585. After the birth of the twins, there is a seven-year period of Shakespeare’s life where no records exist. There are multiple theories as to what he was doing during these periods.
By 1592, there is evidence that Shakespeare earned a living as an actor and a playwright. By 1597, 15 of the 37 plays he wrote were published.
With the exception of Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare’s first plays were mostly histories written in the early 1590s. Over the next dozen years, he would write tragedies, writing the plays for which he is best known; Julius Caesar, Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, Macbeth, and Antony and Cleopatra.
In his final years, he turned to the romantic with Cymbeline, A Winter’s Tale, and The Tempest. His colleagues recognized his talent, and Chamberlain’s Men quickly became the leading dramatic company in London.
Sometime after 1612, Shakespeare retired from the stage and returned to his home in Stratford. He died on April 23, 1616, and was buried in the Stratford Church.
