We have spent some time outside building models of the atom using hula hoops and different sizes/colors of balls. In the classroom our students also worked with Bohr Model kits (made by the Chem PLC team). These activities have helped them learn about how many protons and neutrons belong in the nucleus and how many electrons belong in the different energy levels of atoms.
