Sorry Day Assembly

We are so proud of our students for their performances on Friday at our Sorry Day Assembly.

Our student readers spoke beautifully and proudly. Demi from 5T gave a speech about the meaning of Sorry Day. Joyanna and Jahdee from 4V read a poignant story "Sorry Day" about the Stolen Generations and Mr Rudd's apology. Natarlia and Eemani from 5T recited a beautiful poem from Sister Heart by renowned indigenous author Sally Morgan.

Our Boys Aboriginal Dance Troupe performed a fantastic welcome and cleansing dance.

Our Girls Aboriginal Dance Troupe performed an original composition to Archie Roach's song, Took the Children Away, that was deeply moving.

It was a wonderful mark of respect on this important occasion.

Thank you to everyone who made this a meaningful event.

New Toilet Amenities

We are excited to announce that the refurbishment of our toilet blocks is now finished and they are fully operational.

The feedback we have been receiving from the students is that they love them! Thank you to everyone for your patience during the refurbishment.

Developing Social Skills and Resilience

Developing emotional resilience is an important life skill that can be learned. We have attached a help sheet to help you identify areas where your child can learn ways of coping with social problems or difficult situations.

Volunteer Winner

This week’s raffle winner for ‘coffee and cake’ is Deidre Tolley. Congratulations and thank you!

Don’t forget to sign in when you come and volunteer.

Thanks to The Point Ballina for donating the vouchers for our volunteer winners to enjoy coffee and cake at The Point, overlooking the river.

Have a wonderful week of learning!

Learning Centre News

There’s lots of wonderful intensive learning happening in the Learning Centre every day at Ballina Public School.

Pictured is Mauro Chiesurin enjoying reading with Attila the dog and students in our Story Dogs Program.

Cherie Leon is our Indigenous Girls mentor. She works with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls across the school in developing a strong sense of identity, self confidence and respect. Cherie also assists in developing the literacy of our year 6 girls by engaging them in rich texts. The girls read the text and then work on their comprehension skills by imagining themselves within the story. Cherie is also a talented artist and uses these skills to engage the girls in creative activities.

Students happily engaged in MultiLit daily with our wonderful volunteer tutors.

Thanks to our wonderful LST teacher, Bernie Kelly for all her hard work in the Learning Centre.

More Reconciliation Dancing for our troupes.

In addition to the Sorry Day Assembly, our indigenous dancers celebrated Reconciliation Week with a demonstration at Ballina Centrelink. Well done guys.

Friday Activity Fun

Ballina Public School's PBL Friday Activities for promoting good behaviour continues to be a huge success.

Here are some pictures of Mr Thomas' and Ms Thwaites' woodwork group racing their wooden boats that they have spent the last few weeks perfecting.

Students raced their paddle powered boats down special canals made by Mr Thomas.

Thanks Mr Thomas and Ms Thwaites!

Meanwhile, Ms Franklin has taken some great photos of our Scooter Team ripping it up at the Ballina Skate Park for their PBL Friday Fun. Thanks Ms Franklin!

And finally, here's a couple of a keen angler showing off his catch.

Netball Gala Day

On May 23rd, Ballina Public School students took part in a Netball Gala Day organised by Netball NSW. The aim of the day was all about fun and participation for primary school students in years 5 & 6. A great day was enjoyed by all. Thanks to Miss Bailey for her organisation and supervision.
