Sputnik Starts It All

The USSR (Soviet Union) launched a ball like satellite named Sputnik (a Russian word for "co-traveler") in to orbit, in October 4, 1957 starting the space race. This happened after the start of the cold war in 1947. The space race was started because of the high tensions in the cold war between the US (United States) and the USSR.


A Dog? In Space?

Later on they sent Laika in orbit. Laika was sent into orbit in September 22, 1957.

Vostok 1

T-Minus 15 seconds...

In less than 5 years the Soviet Union sent the first man into space, Yury Gagarin, in April 12, 1961. He was in a spacecraft named Vostok 1.

Apollo 11

Marco! Apollo!

With the USA seeming to lose the space race. The USA planned to do something different than the USSR so they can make a come back. They planned to put a man on the moon! So Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to set foot on the moon in July 20, 1969. Neil and Buzz ridden in the a spacer craft named Apollo 11.
