Senator Cramer's Weekly Update July 1 - July 7

Happy Independence Day!

Once a year we set aside a day to celebrate America’s exceptional brand of liberty with parades and pageantry. The other 364 days we celebrate it by being free. I hope everyone had a safe and fun Independence Day.

Helping Our Veterans

West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin led a group of my colleagues and I in introducing the Suicide Prevention by Eliminating Excessive Digits Act of 2019 (SPEED Act).

The SPEED Act creates a 3-digit dialing code for Veterans in crisis. Just like we all use 9-1-1, veterans may use this dialing code to reach a national suicide prevention and mental health crisis hotline system.

Our veterans offered to give us their all for our freedom. Transitioning back to civilian life can be difficult, stressful, and sometimes traumatic; we need to do everything we can to offer them support and assist their transition into civilian life.

Trade Truce with China

Last week, President Trump announced he will forego increasing tariffs, and China will make significant purchases of our agricultural products. China also made its largest purchase of U.S. soybeans since March.

As the President noted, the United States should not sacrifice a quality deal for an expedient one; and, unfortunately, no deal with China is ever over until it’s over. Their bad faith negotiating repeatedly interferes with reaching a deal.

I applaud the President for bringing the Chinese back to the table and working on behalf of our producers, and I urge him and his administration to keep working toward a deal that benefits our country both now and for generations to come.
