Welcome to the Board's final update of 2016. As I look back on the last 12 months, it is astounding just how much progress Futures has made, how many changes the organisation has embarked upon and how everyone has faced and tackled challenges in an incredibly positive and proactive way.

The Board is acutely aware of just how challenging the last few months, in particular, have been for teams and I would personally like to thank each and every staff member for your ongoing commitment and professionalism which continues to make Futures a top class organisation.

For those who are leaving Futures, my colleagues and I would like to say thank you for everything you have done and for the impact you have made. You have all played a role in making Futures the organisation it is today.

What is very apparent from the latest statistics is that despite the changes we're going through, Futures' exceptional performance has not faltered. That is a glowing tribute to the work you do.

On behalf of the Board, we wish you a very happy Christmas and new year and look forward to celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Group in 2017.

transformation update

Nicky Hope, Director of Business Transformation, and Darren Sanderson-Turner, Business Transformation Manager, provided an update on transformation.

We heard how transformation work in Support Services has now ended and next steps will include moving away from the old method of using Key Performance Indicators to a new set of measures to gauge the performance of Support Services. This is likely to begin in April.

Every team will begin moving towards using measures as transformation continues throughout the business. We believe this will support the organisation's desire to improve outcomes for customers.

Working together

The away day was used as another opportunity for Board Directors and members of the co-executive team to work together and to forge closer working relationships.

We are very keen to increase the visibility of Board Directors as well as promoting the work we do and decisions we make. We will be making a concerted effort to improve our communication to the business in 2017.

We also worked with the co-executive team on exercises designed to highlight our collective strengths, weaknesses and what challenges the business may face from external sources.

The future of futures?

We heard a fascinating presentation on business growth from Polina Baranova, a senior business lecturer from the University of Derby.

She outlined how large companies, such as Virgin and British Airways, have grown by diversifying their businesses.

We then worked in teams to discuss potential ways Futures could grow over the coming years. Business growth will become a key focus for the organisation over the coming months and years.

In other news

The Board considered a number of reports:

  • We approved a range of proposals relating to rent and service charges
  • We approved a new starter tenancy policy
  • We gave direction on the Futures response to two HCA consultation. One consultation is around fees and the other is on splitting investment and regulation arms
  • We were really pleased to hear the latest performance results which showed the organisation has maintained its high performance in spite of the changes we are going through
