Natural selection: camouflage

In the wild animals are put into to groups, prey or predator. In order to survive, the pray started to look for traits that would help them against predators, and those traits were camouflage. Not like the green camouflage that people wear, they wanted a coat color to help their offspring survive by blending into the environment. Differences amongst a species can either helpful or harmful in their survival. So if a species lived on a beach and most of them are black and some of them are a sandy color. The population of black coloring in the species would decrease because they are easier to see to the predators. Then the sandy color population would go up because they blend into their environment.

As you can see, these two goats don't look alike.

Natural selection: individual differentces

No matter what, all species have differences. And some differences can help the species grown and thrive, but some differences can harm the species. If an organism has a difference that can help the species, that organsim will live longer and have more offspring. But if an organism has a difference that can harm the species, they won't live as long and will have little to no offspring. And the same with offspring of those organisms, only the strongest and most helpful offspring will survive while the others don't. This process is called survival of the fittest. For example, a pack of wolfs has a litter of pups and the pack only wants the ones with long tails. If two of the pups have long tails, those pups will grow and have offspring.

Natural selection: designing a species

On the Galápagos Islands, there are many different species, but the one most popularly related to natural selection is the finch. On each different island, there are finches with unique beaks that help them get and eat food. Their offspring will probably have a similar appearance, but it will also have some differentces. If the offspring have a beak that will make getting food easier, they have a better chance of having offspring and surviving. This is a beneficial change in the species, so that is a helpful change. If they have a beak that makes getting food harder they'll have a harder time surviving and producing offspring. For example, if a finch has smaller beak that helps it get food, if its offspring have smaller beaks then they will live longer and have offspring. Each species have different qualities that can help them survive and thrive.
