BIRTH OF A LEGEND
The Infante Sagres opened in 1951. The vision of its creator, the entrepreneur and philanthropist Delfim Ferreira, was to endow the city with a luxury hotel on a par with the finest in Europe. Housed in a listed building, it contains a wealth of decorative features, such as exquisite ironwork, carved wood detail and magnificent stained glass panels from the workshop of Ricardo Leone, Lisbon.
The hotel is named after Prince Henry the Navigator, initiator of the Age of Discovery and the early Portuguese voyages of exploration. Also known as the Prince, or Infante, of Sagres, after the town where he established his school of navigation, he was born in Porto in 1394 to King John I of Portugal and Philippa of Lancaster, sister of Henry IV of England.

DISCOVERING PORTO & DOURO
Porto is a stepping stone to the stunningly beautiful and famous Douro Valley wine region. Visit this UNESCO World Heritage protected area where the spectacular terraced hillside vineyards produce the famous Port wine grapes.
Just an hour by car from the city, many prefer to travel to the Douro by train, one of the best ways to appreciate the incredible landscape with the train hugging the River Douro upstream as it winds its way up to the vineyards. Visits to specific wine estates for tastings and vineyard tours, as well as local boat trips, can also be arranged. One example of this is the great Quinta da Roêda wine estate belonging to Croft Port, in Pinhão, where one can enjoy a picnic amongst the vines, Port tasting and treading of the grapes during the grape harvest season, which usually happens in mid-September.
