Black lives Matter Police brutality and how everyones lives matter By: Garret Hartigan

Black lives matter

African American people have been denied their rights for 245 years. After the civil rights movement in the 1960’s , we as the white race have thought that there is now an equal opportunity for both. We are wrong especially because there are still people getting brutally punished by police officers that have sworn in to protect and sever the people. In the Fred Grays case and many more in the us people have been killed in police custody or being put in police custody. They are being denied the 14th amendment of the U.S constitution. In the 14th amendment states that “nor shall any State shall deprive any person of life, liberty, and property without due process of law.” In the case of some police officers involved in the killings they are committing murder. There is more awareness about what is happening.

This is what the 14th amendment says

Thanks to the help of social media some people were able to film these acts of violence and are able to come to the aid of this mistreatment. When there was a police arrest in New York they choked out and killed 35 year old father, Eric Garner. Garner was tired of being harassed by people and was being accused of selling cigarettes. When the police tried to arrest him, he refused and they choked out and killed him.People of many races gathered together to have a peaceful march and to come to the aid of the Garner family. They were also able to catch a shooting in North Carolina. Thanks to social media once again helping to get justice for this crime. Sometimes there are also ways where people didn't stand up peacefully and created more commotion.

This is the black lives matter hashtag used to spread awareness through social media

One reason is when Fred Gray was killed because of the reclas driving from the officers and having no seatbelts in the back of the police van and it killed him. Just two days after that I was in Baltimore just two days away from the riots that took place. There was a lot of tension in the air with groups of police in riot gear and machine guns. When the riots took place people looted malls, burned down stores and also threw anything and police officers. This was an ineffective way to help to stop these issues and to protest for equality. In all moving forward they should keep using social media and getting it out there to spread awareness of these injustices.
