Blue Room Happenings "Universe" April 21, 2017πŸš€

"U, u" week was UNBELIEVABLE!

Our universe...where to begin?! How about with a couple of awesome videos. The first is a cool rocket experiment by Meghan. Take a look.

The kids and teachers AND Brian AND Jon were completely thrilled and fascinated when she combined baking soda and vinegar to create this fantastic rocket experiment!

We also discovered how our universe moves, and how the planets, sun, moons, stars, and our Milkyway Galaxy move, in relation to one another. Here is our very own human solar system...

Our poem of the week found us blasting off into the universe. How many "U, u's" did we find?

As the week progressed, we created more of our own universe with group painting, stars and planets. We learned that Pluto is no longer a planet. But, astronomers currently say that there are 8 planets. Venus is the hottest, Neptune is the coldest; Jupiter is the biggest while Mercury is the smallest. Jupiter also has many moons and Saturn has the spectacular ice and dust rings. The sun is one very big, hot star. The name of our galaxy is the Milky Way.

This was also Earth week (the perfect place to land our rocket ship on Friday!). We shared many ways that we can be good to our Earth, the creatures and plants, and to the people of Earth. Your children were very thoughtful and generous in their answers. They included keeping garbage off of the floor, turn off the water when done, turn off the lights when you leave the room, don't litter, throw your garbage away, don't waste food, take care of friends, take care of sick people, don't make a flood, walk or bike instead of using a car when possible, save the animals, don't take animals that are not pets. We decided to make bird feeders for the park, which we hung on trees and bushes on Friday. We hope our animal friends had a good snack!

We want to thank Carole, who is teaching us all about self portraits. Thank you Brian and Jon for coming to volunteer. And thank you to Ava's mom Alex, for coming to teach us some games. We love our Friday game days!

Our flag of the week, the United States of America! We let the kids know that our own astronauts placed our flag on the moon. We know all about the 50 stars representing the 50 states, and that the 13 stripes represent the original 13 colonies. Your children were able to share with us what they know about American history. Impressive!

Some fun books we read this week-"On the Moon", Davies; "Astronauts", by Acorn; "Sun, Moon and Stars", by Turnbull; "Astronaut Critter", by Mayer; "Goodnight Moon", by Brown; "Planets", by Scholastic (thank you Lavender); "My Big Science Book", by Smart Kids (thank you Griffin).

Next week is "V,v" week and a trip to the land of the dinosaurs!

Have a spectacular weekend!
