WMCO Training Manual Week 3

Week 3 Goals | Learn basic Associated Press and Rundown Creator functions. Print and practice live National Weather Service weather. Learn functions of DAD 1 and levels on the audio board, apply to Mini Array and Hot Button use. Learn basic FCC Legal Log functions, including checking power. On air and use board for :10 weather update and community events.

First, prepare a weather forecast report for the :10 weather break. This first 10 minutes will go fast, so prepping what you can in the newsroom during your own show prep will help! Teach trainee how to cut and paste text into document in newsroom computer (program a long song for the CD player so you can go and show trainee how to print weather). Print weather forecast (mandatory, not optional). Write on the paper to show trainee how to make the forecast conversational and airable.

Review temperature readings...no rounding! Pick a number and stick with it. Show trainee the thermometer.

You can pull the weather bed up in the DAD Library and play the weather bed out of the cue speakers (behind computer monitors) and teach trainee when to start and stop reading weather report. Assure them this isn't live, and there's a way to practice/preview DAD cuts off the air.

Learn 24-hour/military time. How to count numbers after 12 noon. Be sure you have the DAD clock on 24-hour time (click the time with the mouse until it comes up properly).

Always use four digits, no colons.

Why do we have a FCC Legal Log? Have trainee complete all sign in procedures (except EAS test) for your log today. You do not have to sign the log unless you are supposed to be doing an EAS test for your show.

Signing in/out of legal log—What lines to use on log? (Power check, actual time, output, initials...then at bottom, signature, on/off time.)

What color of ink to use on legal logs? (Only blue or black. No pencil or odd ink colors.)

What do (parenthesis) mean when reading something on the air? They are talent instructions, such as pronouncers. Use for news, community calendar, weather, programming update.

Why are AM/PM not used in broadcast writing/reading/reporting?

What does DAD mean (Digital Audio Delivery)? Have DJ write down acronym and explain use of DAD.

RDS radio receiver in the studio (very top of CD rack). What does RDS mean? (Radio Data System)

Introduction to the audio board. What is a VU Meter? What does it mean? (Volume Unit) Proper VU Meter Reading?

What does “riding gain” mean?

What does “in the red” mean?

Basics of Rundown Creator. DJ login information, how to select a rundown. Tips to preread (should open the program during show prep).

DAD 1 functions only - Hot Buttons and Mini Array 1 (remember our playlist runs out of playback 2, not 1, so do NOT introduce playlist or other DAD functions).

Review all items. Is your trainee taking notes on their printed out sheet? Be sure he/she isn't simply checking items off and throwing the paper away. That is on you if he/she isn't writing things down. Do your part to help your DJ learn.

Check your trainee in within an hour of their shift ending.
