Corey Times November 1st, 2021

LATEST NEWS

The last few weeks have seen many "firsts" at Corey as we continue to provide the most engaging and culturally relevant learning environment for our students. As part of our many "firsts" we have enjoyed our first Hispanic Heritage Celebration sponsored by our PTA, Kinder's first "ABC Fashion Show", Fifth Grade's first "Harry Potter Day", our first "Día de los Muertos" door decorating competition and Third Grade's first Water Safety Fieldtrip to the natatorium. This is in addition to the events that are going on around campus, such as our Fall Orchestra Concert, Fifth Grade fieldtrip to AT&T Stadium, Fourth Grade virtual fieldtrip with the Nasher Sculpture Center, and Red Ribbon week. These sure our exciting times at Corey Academy! We also enjoyed the beautiful weather with some outdoor learning opportunities.

Fun Learning Activities Around Campus

Our Corey Cubs have been working hard (while having fun)! We would like to thank all our staff members for always coming up with creative ideas to make learning fun, as well as all of our parent volunteers for investing countless hours supporting us to make these ideas come to life.

Fifth Grade "Harry Potter Day"

Our Fifth Grade students engaged in an exciting, yet instructional day of learning during our first "Harry Potter Day". Students visited six different rotations which included: 1. Wand Making, 2. Heat Lab 3. Handwriting Practice with Quills, 4. Poetry with the Sorting Hat's Song, 5. Harry Potter Math Jeopardy and 6. Persuasive Writing (What Costume Should My Teacher Wear?). Students each received a letter explaining their six courses of study during this inaugural event. We are so thankful to all the parents for their generous donations and for their assistance during the events.

APEX FUN RUN

We are so thankful for all the generous contributions made during our Apex Fun Run Fundraiser. It was a resounding success made possible by the support of our parents, guardians, relatives and friends. Please take a moment to look over the outstanding statistics from our Apex Fun Run Fundraiser.

DIA DE LOS MUERTOS

Please mark your calendars for November 1st. We will be celebrating "Día de los muertos" as we learn more about traditions from around the world. Traditions connected with this holiday include honoring the deceased using calaveras and aztec marigold flowers (cempazúchitl), building home altars (called ofrendas) with the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, as well as visiting graves with these items as gifts for the deceased.

We will highlight our own rendition of an "ofrenda" in the front of the school. We have included information from Wikipedia about Día de los Muertos (below), as well as information about the event. We hope you can join us!

As part of our celebration, we will hold a door decorating contest. Every homeroom class has worked on a project in which they decorated their classroom door with information about a historical figure that is no longer with us. We will honor their memory by highlighting biographical information as well as contributions.

Our Día de los Muertos celebration will take place on November 1st from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Our celebration will include performances by Sam Houston High School's mariachi and ballet folklorico, as well as "calavera" art projects, viewing of the Disney movie "Coco", concessions sold by the PTA, and the "Kings of Comida Food Truck".

Kings of Comida Food Truck will be on campus with some amazing food available for purchase (cash or card). The menu is as follows:

Tacos ($1.50 a piece) 🌮

Stuffed Avocados ($3) 🥑

Carne Asada Cheese Fries ($10)🍟

Winter Holidays Around the World

Please see message below from our Multicultural Committee:

Our Multicultural Committee would like to provide an opportunity for us to celebrate winter holidays that our school families celebrate. Please complete this form to help us have an idea of which celebrations your family participates in during the winter. We plan to hold a Holidays Around the World Celebration in December with parent volunteers (remember to get your volunteer application through the district for this year) presenting to each grade level about various winter holidays/celebrations during the school day. We will set up and decorate tables to represent each celebration and our volunteers could read a story, share a slide show, have a discussion, or maybe play a game that is part of that celebration with the students. Each station will be only 15 minutes long. We will do it like we do Career Day where each grade level will rotate through the stations. Please take this opportunity to share with us so we can represent as many of our families as possible, and so that we can utilize the many talents and knowledge that we know we have among our amazing Corey families. Thank you for taking the time to complete this short survey.

Kinder Applications

Our Kinder 2022-2023 application window will open on November 1st at 12:00 PM. It will close on January 28th at 5:00 PM.

The kick-off event is called "Explore AISD" where those interested will receive information about AISD's specialized programs. This information meeting is not required in the application process. It is an introductory meeting for those who would like information about the various programs. It will take place on November 8th from 6:00-8:00 PM.

We will also host two Information Meetings for those who are not familiar with the Fine Arts and Dual Language Academies. The Information Meetings will be held on December 7th and January 11th from 6:00-7:00 p.m. These meetings are not required for those families who already have a sibling attending Corey Academy. Please make sure to fill out an application if you have a younger child who you would like to attend Corey. We are only opening the application for the incoming Kinder cohort. Also, please let neighbors or friends know about the application window (November 1st at noon to January 28th at 5:00 p.m.).

CONTACT TRACING

Our school board voted to add contact tracing to its 2021-22 protocols for the school year. With that addition, close contacts of students who test positive for COVID-19 will be identified and notified. Please note that our mode of communication will be sending letters through Class Dojo. Parents may choose to isolate a symptom-free student who is a known contact of a positive case. That absence will be excused, and make-up work will be made available. Close contacts who develop symptoms should isolate until they obtain a COVID-19 test. As a reminder, the district does have a testing center again this year. Details about that can be found here. Please read additional information in "Nurse Jennifer's Corner" below.

DASHBOARD CHANGES

Because of the addition of contact tracing to our protocols, we have also made a change to our COVID-19 dashboard. The dashboard will no longer reflect grade levels impacted since those families will be notified directly. Remember you can find your school's dashboard at the bottom of the campus homepage or the district-wide COVID-19 dashboard here. It is updated before 5 p.m. daily during the week.

Nurse Jennifer's Corner

Please see important information below from Nurse Jennifer:

Good afternoon!

I wanted to touch base with each of you regarding COVID-19 policies and procedures this school year. As we all know, these could change at any time. We will do our best to keep you up to date as things change.

At this time we will begin contact tracing again. When a positive person is on campus we will notify close contacts of that positive person. A close contact will be within 6 feet of the positive person for 15 minutes or more. We will send a letter via Class Dojo to inform you that your student was in contact with a positive person. Your student will not have to quarantine this year. If you feel the need to keep your child home due to being a close contact, then you will be allowed to do so. Please contact the school nurse and front office to let us know if you choose to keep your child home. This year we will not be quarantining classes. If your student does not develop symptoms, then they will be allowed to stay at school.

If your student has symptoms of COVID-19 then you will have three options to have them return to school.

1.) Have student tested for COVID. AISD has a rapid testing center for all students and staff that is free of charge. I will post information on this below.

2.) Student will need to receive an alternate diagnosis from a medical provider to return to class. This form will need to be sent to the school nurse. Example : Suzie King has a sinus infection and can return to school, signed Dr. Smith

3.) Student will need to stay home for 10 days with day zero starting the first day of symptoms. You will need to reach out to your homeroom teacher to coordinate homework during that time.

If your student is a close contact of a family member or friend who has COVID then they can return to school if they do not have symptoms.

If your student is a close contact of a positive person and develops symptoms, then they will be sent home and will need to do one of the three options listed above.

This year any test for COVID will work. PCR, Rapid, Antigen, home testing kits. We will accept each of these. Home Testing kits may only be used for students who do NOT have symptoms. We will need a copy of your student's negative test to return to school.

The testing center is now open for AISD staff and students only. The testing center is by appointment only. To get an appointment please email: rapidtest@aisd.net. Please include the name, school, grade level of your student and your phone number. They will call you to set up your appointment.

If you have any other questions at all please don't hesitate to call me. My number is: 682-867-3906. To send forms or test results to me please email me at: jsmith52@aisd.net

I know these are unprecedented times for us all, but I hope you know that we truly love and care for each child at our school.

Blessings,

Jennifer Smith Rn, BSN

District app

The Arlington ISD has a new app for the new year. The app, which is available here for Apple phones and here for Android phones, features everything from lunch menus to teacher contact information for families. It will also be a quick way to get district notifications. The app is part of the Blackboard notification system the district recently switched over to for communications with district families. The next part of that process will be the phone, email and text notifications families will receive. You will begin receiving messages that way through Blackboard later this month.

Parent support

Please make sure to check the Parent Support section of AISD's website. In this site, you will be able to find information about Bus Services (including signing up for the Bus Bulletin App), Student Dining (including PayPams App) , Parent Self-Serve (to check grades and attendance), Parent Volunteer Applications and many more items of interest.

Please make sure to let us know if we can assist you in any way. We know that times are difficult and that we all need assistance from time to time. Please let our counselor, Mrs. Young know if there are specific needs or concerns.

Corey Cubs PTA

Please make sure to join PTA for the 2021-2022 school year at www.joinpta.org! Registration for this year is now available.

PTA REFLECTIONS CONTEST

Please read message below from our Corey PTA:

"It is time to showcase your talent for the PTA Reflections Contest!

This is a wonderful creative outlet with a very timely theme. Students may create a dance choreography, film production, visual arts, music composition, photography or literature entry. Please look at the guidelines in the link below to ensure entries are within size/material limits set. Each student is able to participate in more than one category if they desire.

All entries due November 8th, 2021. There is a form that needs to be completed with each submission. It is attached below and a copy will be sent home. If your child is not going to be on campus, arrangements can be made for work to be picked up and submitted.

Please reach out to our Reflections Coordinator, Amanda Ray, if you have any questions regarding this opportunity or need assistance securing materials for a submission. The Reflections contest is not mandatory but a great chance for our students to get creative, self reflective and get recognized for their work.
