LES Elementary April 23, 2021

A Note from the Principal...

Well, it has been a unique week to say the least. Normally when we begin state testing, we are worried about severe weather and storms, but this time it was snow that had us a little concerned! You have to love Indiana weather! This week we are highlighting the 3rd grade PBL project, which centers around giving back to those in need. It's the last week of April! Have a wonderful weekend!

Important Information

Project Based Learning for LCSC Students

During the summer of 2020, Loogootee Community Schools had the opportunity to train all staff members in Project Based Learning. Project Based Learning is a method of teaching where students gain knowledge by working for an extensive amount of time on an authentic problem or challenge and develop a solution to the problem. Each grade level classroom has or will complete a project by the end of the school year. Each week, a PBL project will be highlighted so that you can see what our students are working on and creating!

3rd Grade - "Socktober"

As a part of “Socktober,” the third grade created an awareness of the need for socks for homeless shelters. Using various forms of persuasive writing, they created posters, flyers, and a video to share with students about the collection within the building. They collected socks for more than a week, and then sorted them into categories: men, women, and children. The amounts were graphed and added to find a total of more than 1,000 pairs of socks had been collected! After being boxed up, they were delivered to the Ozanam Family Shelter in Evansville. Upon delivery, one of the directors shared the need of other household items, which we hope will lead into a future PBL.

ILEARN Testing Continues Next Week!

This past week we completed all of the Math testing. The students have definitely shown their Grit this week. This week we will be testing again on Tuesday and Thursday, which will be English/Language Arts.

  • Tuesday, April 27th - ELA
  • Thursday, April 29th - ELA
  • Tuesday, May 4th - Science (4th Grade Only)
  • Wednesday, May 5th - Science (4th Grade Only)

We wish the 3rd and 4th grade teachers the best of luck!

LES 4th Grade Math Bowl

Our 4th Grade LES Math Bowl Team competed in a virtual competition on Tuesday, April 13th. Congratulations to the team and their coach, Mrs. Gibson for all of their hard work. Team members include: Abbi Bradley, Gabe Walton, Caleb Park, Bryce Christmas, Lydia Hawkins, Lathen Letterman, Declan Arvin, Jake Lottes, Mosby Jones, Broc Kerns, Grayson Kluesner, MKenna Gregory, and Kelci Hamm.

Summer Daycare

For the summer of 2021, we have decided to cancel our summer daycare program. This was a tough decision, however, due to state requirements of contact tracing and social distancing protocols that have to be followed, we feel this is best to keep everyone safe. We would hate for families to rely on this service and then have to shut down due to contact tracing and cases. Our hope is that we can offer this service again next summer. If you have any questions, you may contact the elementary office. Daycare plans for the fall will be decided this summer.

Martin County 4-H Fair Dates

The Martin County 4-H Fair will be held July 9th-July 13th at the fairgrounds.

LES Power Hour (FREE TUTORING)

Our tutoring service has started. Tutoring is available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays of each week, as long as we have teachers to supervise. We have 20 spots available each day. To give all students an opportunity to receive this service, you must call into the office beginning on Monday of each week to sign up. Tutoring is after until 4:00 PM. Call the elementary office with any questions.
