I was born by the river in a little tent- Sam was born by the river in a tent

Oh and just like the river I've been running ev'r since - he was on the run from whites so he did not get sold

It's been a long time, a long time coming - hes been on the run for a long time

But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will - he knows that things for African Americans will change for the better soon

It's been too hard living, but I'm afraid to die - he's had a hard life but does not want to die

'Cause I don't know what's up there, beyond the sky - does not know if he believes in God.

It's been a long, a long time coming - long time running

But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will - change for African Americans

I go to the movie and I go downtown - goes into town

Somebody keep tellin' me don't hang around - White people keep telling him he does not belong there

It's been a long, a long time coming - long time running

But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will - a change for blacks

Then I go to my brother- sam goes to poeple

And I say brother help me please - asks for help

But he winds up knockin' me- beats him up

Back down on my knees, oh

There have been times that I thought I couldn't last for long - times he thought he would die

But now I think I'm able to carry on - sam has gotten hope

It's been a long, a long time coming- long time running

But I know a change is gonna come, oh yes it will - African American's will get their rights one day
