Bria's Number the Stars Book Diary By Bria

War

I think that war feels rusty. While it smells like smoke and tears. As it taste like blood.

They felt heart broken as they saw all the bombs fly in the air while they heard the BOOMS and POWS!

Community

I think neighbors are friendly, sweet and welcoming. Why I think that is because when I first moved into my neighborhood they gave us treats and welcomed us with a friendly smile.

I would respond by hiding. Also meeting up with the neighborhood with back up plans if anything happens.

Number the Stars

I think this book will be about how people live there lives with this war happening. Also how they make plans to prevent them selves from getting captured or hurt.

Literary Analysis

1. Mama says " Be one of many." I think it means that don't go back to that corner and see him again and be one out of the many people who gets stopped by them. Also so they see the guards only one time like other people have.

2. I think she says it so they won't go back there and to make sure they don't get hurt by the guards or that they don't get taken away.

" Well', Annemarie said slowly' "now I think that all of Denmark must be bodyguard for the Jews, as well." [page 25]

Denmark could support them by giving them food, and knitting them blankets and maybe even provide a home for them. They would protect them from the Germans when needed, and keep them not harmed at all.

1 Annemarie felt honest with her self because she didn't think the situation that she has now would never happen ever, so she wouldn't have to risk her life like this to protect her best friend.

2 I think her feelings were the same because at the end of chapter 3 she got really scared thinking about if this happened. Then the guards came into her room and then she got scared but she couldn't push this feeling away because it was actually real.

3 I think that Annemarie would do anything in her power to protect Ellen. Even if that means holding her necklace so hard in her hand so the soldiers wouldn't find and to leave a print on her.

Predictions

We just read that the Germans are closing all Jewish stores and tormenting them.

Therefore I predict that that they will close some more stores maybe not even belonging to the Jews, and maybe torment other citizens, for not following there rules if they take over Denmark. They might capture citizens, and hurt them to give them information like about the Resistance and there plans if they have any.

We just read... that Mama, Kirsti, Ellen, and Annemaire want to uncle Henrik's house. So everyone would be safer from the soldiers.

Therefore I predict that

We just read that Mrs. Johanson took the Rosens to the dock so uncle Henrik could take them to Sweden to be safe. But on the way back home Mrs. Johanson fell on a root and broke her ankle and Annemaire had to take her home. Then they figured out that Mr. Rosen dropped the package that Peter gave him and now Annemaire has to run to the dock without getting caught , and she needs to get there in enough time. But Annemaire got caught by the soldiers.

Therefore, I predict that Annemaire will convince the soldiers to let her go and they will. Then she will make her way to the docks and the soldiers will follow her secretly to see what she is really doing , and they will see the Rosens and capture them and the Johanson’s will get in big trouble.

Conflict

Conflit

A way that Man vs. Society is shown is how the Rosens are trying to escape the Nazis and are trying to find a safe place (Sweden).

They learned that freedom is not just handed to you. You have to fight for your freedom and you have to earn it to be in a safe place.

How I knew it was this type of conflict is by the fact that the Rosens are trying to escape Denmark with there names being wanted by the Nazis and that the Nazi soldiers are willing to do whatever to get all the Jewish people in Denmark and that includes the Rosens.

Conflict

How Man vs Man was shown is by at the beginning of the book Annemaire was stopped by a guard on the end of a sidewalk. She was trying to get away from the guard but he kept asking her questions.

Annemarie learned that if she gets stopped by this guard once she doesn't want to get stopped by him again. If she had gotten stopped by that guard again sometime in the book then she would've been in big trouble and she possibly in some way could have risked Ellen's life even more than it is.

How I knew this was a conflict was because Annemaire was frightened to death being stopped by that guard. He took her backpack and looked inside of it and she didn't know what he was going to do with her at all. That is how I know it was a conflict.

Conflict

A way that Man vs Nature was shown was when Mrs. Johansen was running back after her succesful journey getting the Rosens safely to the docs. On her way back home she tripped on a root from a tree and broke her ankle. This shows Man vs Nature.

Mrs. Johansen learned to not run in the woods late at night since she did she broke her ankle. She tried to crawl back, but she couldn't stand the pain and she slept on the ground until Annemaire came out and woke her up.

How I knew it was this type of conflict is by she broke her ankle on a tree root. Then they realized that Mr. Rosen dropped the package and they had to deliver it to Uncle Henrik themselves and Mrs. Johansen couldn't do it because she broke her foot so Annemaire had to do it.

Conflict

A way that there was Man vs Himself was when Annemaire was thinking to herself wether or not she would sacrifice her life for her loved ones or not. She kept going back and forth if she would do this courages thing or not.

Annemaire learned that she is braver than she thought. She ended up risking her life for her best friend at the end.

How I knew it was this type of conflict is by that Annemaire kept arguing with herself deciding if she would be as daring and as brave as the people she have heard about in the stories that her Grandfather have told her about.

Theme

Don't let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game

This theme means that you shouldn't let your fear get in the way of what you want to accomplish.

In the book it this theme showed to me when the Rosens were hiding in the boat and and Mrs.Rosen was afraid to go across the sea because she gets seasickness but she did it anyway because she was determined to get to her and her families freedom. Also that the Rosen family wasn't afraid to do whatever they could to get to safety.

Good friends come and go, but bestrides last forever

This quote means that you might have some good friends that you meet in school or something and that you would probaly forget about them in the future. But best friends can last through any tough situation big or small.

How this was shown in the book is that Annemaire was there with Ellen in the tough situations like when the guards came to their house and inspected the place to see if the Rosens were there. Also Annemaire and Ellen were still best friends because Annemaire kept the Star of David necklace to remind her of Ellen.
