The Weston Weekly August 6, 2021

Good Afternoon ~ Our first full week is under our belts. The students have adjusted well and have been hard at work in their classrooms. There are new announcements below. Please take a moment to read over them. You should also receive an email from School Dismissal Manager within the next few days. It will help us tremendously if you can set that up as soon as possible. We appreciate all of your cooperation and patience as we have welcomed students back into our building. Have a restful weekend. ~ Mrs. Welch

  • Please send your child with a water bottle each day. It is very warm outside. Our drinking fountains are closed, but we do have bottle filler avaialable around the building.
  • Bus riders must wear masks. Many bus riders are not coming to school prepared.

School Dismissal Manager

Families should receive an email from School Dismissal Manager as early as today. Please take a few moments to get your account set up this weekend. Weston will begin using the information provided for Monday's dismissal. Please make sure to check the default setting is correct or change it to the correct default. If your student has different transportation depending on the day of the week, please provide that information by choosing weekday defaults. More information is provided below.

Attendance Clarification

I would like to clear up some confusion on the attendance changes coming from the state. If your student is asked quarentine they will be coded in PowerSchool attendance as VIRT- COV -- Virtual Temporary due to COVID -19. This is the coding that the State of Indiana Dept. of Education has asked us to use.

Please understand that only staff members see the attendance information. Also, it does not necessarily mean that your student has COVID-19, it just means that your student is absent due to a COVID-19 situation.

If your student is sent home for an extended period of time, your teacher will work with you so they can stay connected and working while they are gone.

If you have any questions, or concerns, please do not hesitate to call our main office at 317-462-1492.

Community Involvement & Clubs

Social Work Corner ~ Mrs. Miller

Each month at Weston Elementary, we highlight a different character trait. Students learn about the trait through morning announcements, activities, and role modeling throughout the building. As we talk about teamwork during August, we will also highlight associated characteristics involved, such as ways to be a good communicator, collaboration with others, a willingness to share new ideas, being open to feedback, and demonstrating initiative. Your child will internalize these characteristics when they are also reinforced at home. You might share a compliment such as “I liked how you looked at me while we were talking” OR “You really showed teamwork when we were working together to fix your bike”.

School Supplies ~ With the assistance of many community partners, school supplies will once again be available for all students in need. These supplies, which may not include everything on your child’s supply list, will be available in each Greenfield-Central building beginning on July 21st, and as needed throughout the year.

Shoes & Clothing ~ Journey Bags is a community organization that provides free new and gently used clothing for children in need. A week’s worth of clothing & underwear is provided, as are some hygiene products. Families may contact Tammy Caldwell at 812-473-6451 or Tcaldwell631@gmail.com

Changing Footprints makes new and gently used shoes available at no charge for both children and adults. A small supply is available at Weston Elementary and other sizes may be requested as needed. Please contact Mrs. Terry Miller, Weston’s School Social Worker, for more information. temiller@gcsc.k12.in.us or 317-462-1492.

If you are in need of school supplies for your child(ren), please contact Mrs. Terry Miller @ Weston Elementary. She will gather needed supplies for your child and get them to your child on the first day of school. Mrs. Miller’s email address is temiller@gcsc.k12.in.us. Please indicate your child(ren)’s name and grade level in the email.

Parent/Teacher Organization (PTO)

Welcome to all the new Weston families! Welcome back to all the returning Weston families!

We hope everyone had a fantastic summer break and we are looking forward to an awesome school year! The PTO will have a message in Mrs. Welch’s Weston Weekly newsletter each week where we will keep you up to date with events, fundraisers, PTO meetings, staff birthdays, and Wish Lists and Favorite Things Lists for staff members. The Wish Lists and Favorite Things Lists are updated by the staff so please check in on those throughout the school year to find out what items staff members are in need of for their class or groups. If you’re looking for ideas for a little birthday treat, thank you, holiday gift, or a just-because-surprise for a staff member that works with your child, the Favorite Things Lists are here to help! A link to those lists will always be at the bottom of our PTO Weston Weekly message. We look forward to sharing this new school year adventure with you!
