The Kingdom of God on earth

The words of the Lord's prayer that Jesus taught to his disciples are very well known but have you ever stopped to think what they mean?

"Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven." (Matthew 6v10)

Jesus is teaching us that God has a plan and purpose with this earth. He created it for a reason, it all points to his future Kingdom and importantly, this is something that will happen on the earth.

"...God himself that formed the earth and made it, he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited" (Isaiah 45v18)
"For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea" (Habakkuk 2v14)

God created the earth with a clear purpose. It was not just to be inhabited, but was to be inhabited with people who would know him, know his glory - his perfect character, and willingly respond by seeking to develop that character in themselves.

If you want to be part of God's Kingdom then you have to respond now while there is still opportunity...

"When the Son of man (Jesus) shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world" (Matthew 25v31-34)

This also tells us when it's going to happen, "when Jesus shall come in his glory". Jesus is going to be the King over God's Kingdom and so it will be established when Jesus is sent back to the earth.

After Jesus had been raised from the dead, he was taken up into heaven from Mount Olivet. The disciples were told by the angels "Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven." (Acts 1v11)

God's Kingdom is the only answer to the worlds problems. Think about what can be achieved with a righteous King, the Lord Jesus Christ, ruling over a people that truly serve God...

"He shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears: but with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth"

(Isaiah 11v4)

"And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever."

(Isaiah 32v17)

"and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks"

(Isaiah 2v4)

"...neither shall they learn war any more"

(Isaiah 2v4)

When the people of the world are moved to turn to God's standards, then problems of disease and sickness disappear.

"Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing"

(Isaiah 35v5-6)

World resources will at last be fairly distributed to all. We are given beautiful pictures of the earth producing an abundance, even in seemingly unlikely places " the desert blossoming as the rose".

"There shall be an handful of corn in the earth upon the top of the mountains"

(Psalm 72v16)

All of these remarkable things are only made possible when the earth is full of people and nations who are willingly educated and subject to God's ways and laws.

"and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem"

(Isaiah 2v3)

No wonder Jesus told his disciples to pray for the time of God's Kingdom to come! Why not use the opportunity now to respond to God and make this your prayer too...

Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
