Lincoln and Johnsons Plan for Reconteiction By:Agus LoYo and Zach Allen

Lincolns Plans

He wanted an easy route for a great outcome. All he needed from the south was at least 10% of people every state had to apologize for their actions and then they were allowed to join back into the union. He wanted equality but getting people to help him do it was a difficult task.

Andrew Johnson

Andrew Johnson's Plan For Reconstruction

Johnsons plan was a lot more complicated. His plan envisioned the following. Pardons would be granted to those taking a loyalty oath. No pardons would be available to high confederate officials and persons owning property valued in excess of $20,000. A state needed to abolish slavery before being readmited. A state was required to repeal its secession ordinance before being re admitted.

Gordon Granger

Slavery Ends in Texas

Gordon Granger was a commander for a large union force to take control of Texas. Juneteenth was the day that slaves were declared free. The freed mans beuro was an organized event that gave freed slaves an opportunity to won land, get education, medicine, and a job.

Andrew Hamilton

New Texas Governer Appointed

Johnson needed a new governor because if you did not agree to secesion he would have to kick them out of the government and appoint a new one. Texas's governer resigned and that let to picking Andrew Hamilton.

The delegates at the constitutional convention were mostly confederate and they did not want freedmen to have any rights. They were angry at the fact that they were even freed. Yes the convention was bias because most of the people were confederate.

A New Constitution

Instead of writing a new constitution the delegates amended the constitution Texas had before the civil war. The amendments were important. They notified secession and the states war debt and ablish slavery. The cons, titution of 1866 stopped short of granting African American Texans equal rights. Freed people owned the right to own property and to enter into contracts.

When ex confederates took control and refused to ratify the 13th and 14th amendments to the US constitution. The thirteenth amendment outlawed slavery was refused and as well as the fourteenth amendment which protected the right of a former slave.

Black code were created by mean and racist people that reduced the rights of black people and it stopped them from voting, serving of juries, and could not testify against whites in court.

Congress Takes Control

Congress did not believe in Johnsons plan because it took a lot of time and put a lot of pressure on the southern states. It pretty much took away their government choosing and the Union had to pick their polititions for that state.
