Student Affairs Year in Review 2017-2018

A Message from the Senior Vice President

The 2017-18 academic year was a time for reflection and growth in the Division of Student Affairs at RIT. We created new programs, services, and departments; deployed new technologies; and constructed new spaces.

We live in a time of frequent change stimulated by emerging technologies, global aspirations, the diversification of our students, societal challenges, and much more, yet our staff continue to thrive; pivoting and fine-tuning where necessary. Our dedicated team has successfully inspired, improved, and evolved our services and programs in support of one common goal - to support our students in becoming the best that they can be.

While our work is ever-changing, we continue to be energized by our students' commitment to operating in a space where collaboration and inclusion are of upmost importance. We strive to provide our students with one-of-a-kin opportunities to discover and explore.

As we celebrate our recent successes, we remain "positively restless," whereby continuous improvement is simply a part of our collective DNA. We look forward to an exciting 2018-18 academic year!

Go Tigers!

Sandra S. Johnson, Senior Vice President for Student Affairs

Changing the World

The Division of Student Affairs is committed to developing and maintaining connections between RIT students and the world in which they live. We provide students with experiences and opportunities to develop and enhance the skills and competencies necessary for them to engage and solve challenging problems in a rapidly changing global community. At RIT, we are committed to changing the world.

In the Division of Student Affairs, we have confidence that an engaged student is a successful student and we ensure that RIT students have opportunities to discover and enrich their passions and realize their dreams. Engagement in student clubs and organizations, fraternities and sororities, wellness programs, leadership opportunities and the like compliment the rigorous academic programs, typically leading to higher rates of college completion, an increased sense of belonging, and enhanced communication and critical thinking skills.

At RIT, we believe that a resilient mindset and a sense of self-awareness are two integral skills for success at RIT and beyond. We believe in the importance of investing in programs that support student development to ensure that our students graduate from RIT with the skills necessary to navigate today’s changing world.

The Division of Student Affairs continues to focus strategic efforts on the advancement of student learning opportunities outside of the classroom, with an emphasis on programs that promote essential skills including critical thinking, effective communication and collaboration. We are committed to the development of programs that will enable our students to be successful in finding their passion, defining their purpose, and being a part of positive change in the world.

In today’s changing world, it is important that the Division of Student Affairs remain committed to the development of innovative practices that facilitate and encourage new ideas and support opportunities for growth. As RIT continues on its upward trajectory and our student needs continue to evolve, we respond by adjusting our programs, policies and practices, testing and implementing new technologies, and re-aligning our organizational structure.
