Desert Willow Elementary Learning for life and loving to learn february 27, 2019

Dear DWES families, students and staff,

Thank you to all who have participated in this month's Read-a-thon and Book Fair. What a fun event and a terrific way to get our students reading.

Dr. Egan

Congratulations to our PBIS drawing winners for this week. Roadrunners are Respectful, Responsible and Kind!

Where in the world is ricky roadrunner?

Each week our school mascot, Ricky Roadrunner, finds a new Country to explore. Our students receive clues during morning announcements that give them hints as to where Ricky Roadrunner might be. On Friday, Ricky Roadrunner’s current location is revealed and the students enjoy a slide show of that country during their lunchtime. See if you can help your student locate where Ricky Roadrunner was last week and where he might be this week?

Where was Ricky Roadrunner last week? Two weeks ago Ricky was in New Zealand.

Where is Ricky this week? Here are some clues.....

This country is an island country, off the east coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean. It is the fourth largest island in the world. The capital is Antananarivo, home to over 2 million people. The official languages of this country are Malagasy and French. This country is classed as one of the world’s 17 megadiverse countries that are considered to be home to the majority of the worlds biodiversity. Over 70% of the 250,000 wildlife species found in this country are found nowhere else in the world. While 90% of the estimated 14,000 plants native to this country are also found nowhere else. The lemur is only found in the wild in here. The majority of these are classified as rare or endangered. Several species of lemur such as the giant lemur have become extinct in the past, mainly due to extensive deforestation. The unique ecology has led some scientists to refer to the country as the "eighth continent" of the world. This country has the 3rd largest coral reef system in the world, the Toliara coral reef, off the south-western coast. It is one of the world’s main suppliers of vanilla and cloves, while coffee, lychees and shrimp are also important agriculturally. The country currently provides half of the world's supply of sapphires and produces a number of other precious and semi-precious stones. The national sport is rugby, with football (soccer) also popular. These people have a number of traditional pastimes. Moraingy is a type of hand-to-hand combat, tolon-omby the wrestling of zebu cattle, is also popular in regional areas. While fanorona, is a famous a board game invented there.

Can you guess where Ricky is this week? Check our newsletter next week for the answer.
