Song One-Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana https://youtu.be/zYxkezUr8MQ
With the lights out, it's less dangerous, Here we are now, entertain us, I feel stupid and contagious, Here we are now, entertain us, A mulatto, An albino, A mosquito, My libido
"Smells Like Teen Spirit" has an angry, loud, and grungy sound that embodied the grunge of teenagers during the 90's. This song would be on Holden's playlist today because the lyrics represent a lot of mixed emotions and confusion about life and sex. Holden claims that "Sex is something I just don't understand too hot"(Salinger, 82). The song goes from happy to sad to angry in the same way that Holden does. It would be a good song for him to listen and be able to relate to.
Song Two- There is a Light that Never Goes Out by The Smiths https://youtu.be/4WPZMhFa84U
Take me out, tonight, where there's music and there's people who are young and alive, Driving in your car, I never never want to go home, Because I haven't got one anymore....And if a double-decker bus, crashes into us, to die by your side, is such a heavenly way to die
This song represents Holden's urge to be free and experience life during his "free" weekend. He is sick of phonies and wants to be with people who are actually living their life to the fullest, like in the lyrics, "...people who are young and alive". Holden does not want to go home while on his adventure because he also feels like he does not have one anymore. Lastly, Holden would be able to relate to this song due to the reference to suicide, which is a big theme in Holden's life during the weekend that he is describing. When Holden got hit by Maurice in his hotel room, he claimed that he really felt like "committing suicide. I felt like jumping out the window. I probably would've done it, too, if I'd been somebody'd cover me up as soon as I landed" (Salinger, 136).
Song Three- When I Come Around by Green Day https://youtu.be/7rPkiaJrRNo
Well, I heard it all before, so don't knock down my door, I'm a loser and a user so I don't need no accuser To try and slag me down because I know you're right
Holden would be able to relate to this song because he knows that he gets in trouble a lot and is tired of adults and "phonies" always reminding him of what he is doing wrong and how he is going to ruin his future. He is aware that he is a loser and it only makes him depressed when adults tell him what he has done wrong. When Holden goes to see Mr. Spencer for the last time, Mr. Spencer claims that he would "like to put some sense in that head of yours, boy. I'm trying to help you," Holden knew that this was true, but he "didn't like hearing him say that...it was very depressing," (Salinger, 20).
Song Four- Spirits by The Strumbellas https://youtu.be/Wpv-vGScrvU
I spent a lot of nights on the run And I think oh, like I'm lost and can't be found I'm just waiting for my day to I think oh, I don't wanna let you down 'Cause something inside has changed And maybe we don't wanna stay the same I got guns in my head and they won't go Spirits in my head and they won't go I got guns in my head and they won't go
Holden would be able to relate to this song because he often feels like he has spirits in his head that he can't get rid of, in this case, it is the spirit of his brother, Allie. Whenever he was walking down the street, Holden would get a scary feeling that he would never make it across the street and that would just keep going "down, down, down, and nobody'd ever see me again", he would imagine that was talking to Allie, saying, "Allie, don't let me disappear. Please, Allie" (Salinger, 257).
Song Five- All Apologies by Nirvana https://youtu.be/0LFVQpDKHk4
I wish I was like you Easily amused Find my nest of salt Everything is my fault I'll take all the blame Aqua sea foam shame Sunburn with freeze burn Choking on the ashes of her enemy
Holden would most likely have this song on his playlist because this song also has the grungy and emotional sound and lyrics that Nirvana is famous for. With lyrics like "I wish I was like you, easily amused," Holden would be able to relate this to how he feels about his younger siblings and how he wishes that he was able to find the good things in life easier than he does. He views the world with a pessimistic outlook and often thinks that everything is his fault and feels like he owes the world an apology.
Song Six- Today by The Smashing Pumpkins https://youtu.be/yCSLK0WCUd8
Pink ribbon scars That never forget I tried so hard To cleanse these regrets My angel wings Were bruised and restrained My belly stings
This song would be on Holden's playlist due to the grungy sound that The Smashing Pumpkins have and the lyrics represent how Holden would feel after he got in one of the many fights he experienced in the novel. When he gets hurt in a fight, he chooses to admire the look of his bloody face and to pretend that he got shot in the stomach rather than think about his regrets. His "angel wings" are also bruised and restrained because he knows that he is slowly losing his innocence by going through the inevitable process of growing up.
Song Seven- Another Brick in the Wall by Pink Floyd https://youtu.be/BN5Z28Dfl7o
We don't need no education, we don't need no thought control, no dark sarcasm in the classroom, teachers leave them kids alone
This song would be on Holden's playlist because it perfectly represents how he feels about school. Most of the time, Holden would just wish that teachers would leave students alone, especially in his speech class.
Song 8- Dark Paradise by Lana Del Rey https://youtu.be/8ZwCu8u0bzA
And there's no remedy for memory your face Is like a melody, it won't leave my head Your soul is hunting me and telling me That everything is fine But I wish I was dead
This song would be on Holden's playlist because it represents how Holden feels now that his brother Allie is dead. He constantly remembers him and never found any closure with it so it is almost like it is haunting him. Even though the thought of his brother comforts him, he still wishes he was dead for most of the novel.
Song 9- Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol https://youtu.be/XaKr98ktoxU
If I lay here, if I just lay here, Would you lie with me and just forget the world
This would be on Holden's playlist because it represents his wish to isolate himself while also wanting companionship. He wants to forget the world and not talk to anyone most of the time, as he explains when he describes his wish to pretend to be mute and deaf and live in a log cabin in the woods.
Song 10- Hear Me by Imagine Dragons https://youtu.be/EkB2eJfF3W8
Can nobody hear me, I've got a lot that's on my mind, I can not breathe, can you hear it, too
Holden would have this song on his playlist because it represents his bad communication skills and the fact that he always has so much on his mind but never says the right thing in order to let people know how he truly feels.
