Build Knowledge & Connections

Read on to see how you can make a difference by tracking down specific information and reaching out to other groups.

Unleashed in the District

Will #HandsOffDC be the umbrella movement for preserving our autonomy in the new regime? Read “Hundreds Of Washingtonians Plot To Keep Meddlesome Congress's 'Hands Off D.C.'” in DCist to find out how this new effort is coming together and who’s involved. Help needed to connect with these organizations; contact Amy.

Unleashed in Maryland

Thanks to some great research by Sara Baum, we are starting to develop a strategy for Operation Take Down Hogan. For one, it seems that despite some reporting on his huge war chest, he is beatable. Democrats outnumber Republicans in MD. We can do this! At the next meeting, we would like to get the group's consensus on being in touch with Together We Will, a group already organizing to demand Hogan attend a town hall. Sara's ace investigation has turned up the list of possible Democratic contenders. As for getting out the vote, we need to support Maryland HB345, which allows for registration and voting at your polling place on voting day. Contact: Laura.

Unleashed in Virginia

Don’t let VA gerrymander the presidency. The VA GOP has proposed legislation to allocate electoral votes based on who wins the state's congressional districts. Since these districts are already gerrymandered to ensure for Republican victories, this change could transform Virginia into a solid red state. How this undermines the principle of one person, one vote. What the ACLU and the League of Women Voters are fighting for instead. Help needed to reach out to these organizations and learn what we can do; contact Devora.

Help Democrats win. So many important decisions are made at the state level! All 100 delegate seats will be determined this year. Republicans currently hold 66 and Democrats have not even run opposing candidates in many districts in the past but this year are inspired to run more challengers, especially where Democrats higher up on the ballot have won. Help needed to reach out to area Democratic groups such as Loudoun Democrats, Fairfax Democrats and Arlington Young Democrats (links are included in our google doc for Virginia) as well as the Indivisible Groups Grassroots Alexandria and Indivisible Arlington VA; contact Michael.

Unleashed National Issues

Immigration. In many parts of Maryland, law enforcement actively cooperates with ICE to detain and deport people for reasons as petty as a speeding ticket. The resulting fear, isolation, and mistrust undermine public safety. Tell Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett and Council President Roger Berliner to get behind a Maryland Trust Act. Or phone them at 240-777-2500 and -7828.

Voting rights. Republicans are using bogus allegations of fraud to make it harder for people to vote. Read “The Voting Rights Manifesto,” a state-by-state plan to play offense while defending democracy. Organizations to support: Let America Vote, VoteRiders, and The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund (LDF).

Corruption. So many conflicts, so much intrigue--what can we do about it? Organizations to support: Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), which is already suing Trump over emoluments, and United to Protect Democracy, formed by lawyers from the Obama administration to fight abuses of power. (Potential whistleblowers, take note.)
