Tor Eldevik Project Co-leader and leader of RF-4, UiB

What is your specific role in the project?

To identify which parts of northern climate and possibly of related ecosystem that can be predicted seasons to years into the future.

Which scientific question do you hope to answer at the end of the project?

To what extent present changes in the Barents Sea (and on land in Svalbard) are representative of more pan-Arctic change in the future.

If you had to choose another discipline within the Nansen Legacy, which one would you choose?

It would be good to have a deeper understanding of life conditions for the ecosystem and the living Barents Sea.

The Arctic, what fascinates you the most?

The contrasts; open vs ice-covered seas, midnight sun vs polar night, how Svalbard is literally coming out of the ice.

What is the first thing you think off when hearing the name, Fridtjof Nansen?

The Arctic explorer whose Fram-expedition was among the moments that defined a nation leading up to Norwegian independence in 1905. And also that my grandmother’s aunt divorced my grandmother’s uncle to become Nansen’s second wife.

Which book/film/music has made the largest impression on you lately?

“Spring” (“Våren”) by Knausgård, and “The Sellout” by Paul Beatty.
