Last year the ACZM family grew by 10! Read on to learn more about the newest additions to the ACZM family.

Jeffrey R. Applegate, Jr, DVM, Dipl ACZM

Dr. Applegate was born and raised on the coast of New Jersey where he still enjoys being near the beach. He attended Virginia Tech for undergraduate studies in animal science and biology and Kansas State University for veterinary school. Following a small animal rotating internship at the Animal Medical Center in New York City, he worked as an exotic animal clinician in a busy New Jersey private practice. He then served as faculty at North Carolina State University, College of Veterinary Medicine in the exotic animal medicine service for over five years where he remains involved as adjunct faculty. Dr. Applegate is a founding member of the Honey Bee Veterinary Consortium (HBVC), in which he served terms as secretary, conference chair, and president. While he is happy to work with most species, Dr. Applegate particularly enjoys avian and raptor medicine, aquatic animal medicine, and reptile medicine. Prior to his formal veterinary training, he also worked as a small animal veterinary technician and a volunteer firefighter. In his free time he enjoys the outdoors and tending his own apiary.

Kate E. Archibald, DVM, Dipl ACZM

Originally from Rhode Island, Dr Archibald obtained her DVM from North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2014. She continued her veterinary training as a small animal intern at VCA West Los Angeles and then moved to Nebraska for a year-long internship at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium. She returned to North Carolina to complete a residency in zoological medicine at NC State, the North Carolina Zoo, and the NC Aquariums. Dr Archibald recently joined the veterinary team at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore.

Kyle Donnelly, DVM, MPH, Dipl ACZM

Dr. Donnelly earned her DVM from the University of Florida in 2014. While in veterinary school she obtained her Master of Public Health, focusing on mycobacteriosis in sea turtles as sentinels for ocean health. She then completed a small animal rotating internship followed by a specialty internship in avian and exotic pet medicine at the Animal Medical Center in New York City. In 2016 she returned to Florida and completed a residency in zoological and wildlife medicine at the University of Florida and White Oak Conservation Center in 2019. Her research interests center on infectious diseases and treatment of wildlife, particularly coxiellosis in rhinos and fibropapillomatosis in sea turtles. Dr. Donnelly recently joined Brevard Zoo as staff veterinarian where she cares for animals at the zoo, the Sea Turtle Healing Center, and the Florida Wildlife Hospital. When she is not working you can find her watching her favorite band, Morningbell, which is led by her husband.

Molly Gleeson, DVM, Dipl ACZM

Dr. Gleeson is a California native and obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Integrative Biology at the University of California, Berkeley. She graduated from UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in 2013 and went on to complete both a small animal rotating internship at VCA Animal Referral and Emergency Clinic of Arizona and a specialty avian and exotics internship at Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists. She then returned to the University of California, Davis for a zoological companion animal residency. For the last year, Dr. Gleeson has worked as a veterinarian in the Avian and Exotics service at ACCESS Specialty Animal Hospital in Los Angeles, where she treats a variety of zoological companion species.

Kate Gustavsen, PhD, DVM, Dipl ACZM

Dr. Gustavsen began a scientific career with a PhD in neurobiology from University of California, Berkeley. She developed an interest in clinical medicine while studying the rhesus macaque visual system, and turned her career path toward zoological medicine with a DVM from University of California, Davis. Dr. Gustavsen then completed a rotating internship at Texas A&M University, a postdoctoral position in the Companion Zoological Animal Research Laboratory at UC Davis, and a residency at the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Bronx Zoo. Dr. Gustavsen joined Lincoln Park Zoo as Associate Veterinarian in 2017, and is also an active member of the AAZV Research and Grants Committee. As a diplomate of the ACZM, Dr. Gustavsen hopes to continue advancing knowledge in zoological medicine and contributing to the training of future zoo veterinarians. Her immediate plans post-boards include rekindling interests in live music and outdoor recreation.

Michael Hyatt, DVM, Dipl ACZM

Dr. Hyatt joined the Wildlife Conservation Society in 2018 as the associate veterinarian at the New York Aquarium. He manages the daily clinical activity for the aquarium’s entire collection including fish, sharks, sea turtles, penguins and marine mammals. He graduated with a duel B.S. in Marine Science and Biology from the University of Miami in 2000. He then completed his D.V.M. from the University of Florida’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 2006. He completed a 1yr small animal internship in Maitland, FL; a 1yr internship at The Florida Aquarium; and a 2yr internship at the Georgia Aquarium before becoming the staff veterinarian at Adventure Aquarium in Camden, NJ for 7 years. Dr. Hyatt's research interests include shark stress physiology and shark reproductive health.

Benjamin Lamglait, DVM, MSc, Dipl ECZM (ZHM), Dipl ACZM

Dr. Lamglait earned his DVM degree from the École Nationale Vétérinaire de Nantes, France, in 2009 and served as a full time associate veterinarian at the Réserve Africaine de Sigean, France, from 2010 to 2016. He graduated with a Master in science in reproduction biology from the Université François Rabelais, France, in 2012 focusing on a project on postmortem survivability of sperm cells in captive exotics bovids and completed an ACZM residency program at the Université de Montréal, Canada in 2019, with rotations in Zoo de Granby and Aquarium du Québec. Currently Dr. Lamglait is a clinical instructor at Université de Montréal – Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative.

Ellie Louise Milnes, MA, VetMB, DVSc

Dr. Milnes graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2010. She started out in rural mixed animal practice in Cornwall, England, then in 2012 moved to New Zealand’s North Island where she worked for three years as a large animal vet focusing on medicine of dairy cattle. Dr. Milnes then completed a three-year ACZM and ECZM (Zoo Health Management) residency in zoological medicine and pathology at the Toronto Zoo in Canada. During her residency she completed a doctorate on the eco-epidemiology and treatment of babesiosis in cervids. Dr. Milnes is now based in Kenya where she works at Ol Jogi Wildlife Conservancy, one of East Africa’s oldest rhino sanctuaries, and is a veterinary fellow of the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute’s Global Health Program.

Jennifer N. Niemuth, DVM, PhD, Dipl ACZM

Dr Niemuth graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a BS in Wildlife Ecology. During veterinary school Dr Niemuth worked on research projects in the West Nile virus laboratory at the National Wildlife Health Center in Madison, WI. Jennifer received her doctorate in veterinary medicine from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, completed a one-year rotating small animal internship at Animal Emergency and Referral Center in Northbrook, IL followed by a one-year avian and exotic pet medicine and surgery internship at Animal Specialty Center in Yonkers, NY. After working for one year as a general practitioner with a specific interest in special species, Dr Niemuth was accepted into North Carolina State University’s ACZM-approved Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology PhD program and successfully defended a doctoral research on the characterization of cold stun syndrome in North Carolina sea turtles using NMR-based metabolomics and random forest modeling in 2019. Dr Niemuth is interested in wildlife health, conservation medicine, and diseases of free-ranging wildlife at all scales, as well as the potential impact of climate change on wildlife disease.

Lynnette Waugh, DVM, Dipl ACZM

Dr. Waugh is originally from the central coast of California. She earned her DVM and BS in Animal Biology at the University of California at Davis. After graduation, she completed a rotating internship at VMSG in Ventura, California, a zoological medicine internship at the Phoenix Zoo, and a residency in zoological medicine at the Oklahoma City Zoo. She was an associate veterinarian at Zoo Atlanta and has just moved back to California to continue her career at the Oakland Zoo.
