Part 1. What is climate change?

Climate change-A change in global or regional climate patterns.

A change of climate is largely due to the amounts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is emitted by the use of fossil fuels, industrial processes, and the burning of vegetation.

-Climate change is the increase or decrease of an average temperature in a location. Ex. If average temperature in San Francisco was 62 degrees and it rose 3 degrees.

Sub Challenges

Extreme Weather events- Heatwaves, droughts, storms, cyclones and floods are more likely to occur with changes to our climate. All of these occurrences have the opportunity to rip apart communities and small countries.

Lack of food- High temperatures and a shortage of water will kill crops. Therefore forcing us to resort to algal blooming, while at the same time raising acidity in oceans and disrupting fisheries.


Part 2. Current state

NASA stated that Global average temperature has risen 1.7 degrees since 1880. The average temperature and all other sub-challenges are directly correlated. The higher the temperature the more glaciers melt, more crops die, etc.

Sea level has risen 15cm on the 20th century, increasing the risk of flood in flood vulnerable areas. Coastal areas are at the highest risk when it comes to sea levels. If the seas continue to rise at this rate parts of San Francisco, and other cities on the coast . will be underwater

Carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere are at the highest in over 650,000 years. Carbon dioxide has increased in our atmosphere by forty percent since the Industrial revolution. Carbon dioxide damages the ozone; which protects us from UV radiation from the sun. Without the Ozone it would be difficult for any species to survive.

We have lost over 400 billion tons of ice from glaciers since 1994. When glaciers melt they normally melt into the ocean depending on their location. Increase of fresh water in the ocean will kill habitats and everything else that lives there. Fresh water also pushes down salt water, therefore affecting currents as well.

Part 3. How will it affect certain countries?

A country that will be affected by Climate change the most is Greenland. There is over one million cubic meters of Ice in Greenland, and it is all melting at a steady pace. Whalers and Sealers stated that Ice was one meter (3 feet) thinner than the day before. The UNESCO-protected ice fjord near Ilulissat, has retracted ten Km (6 miles) from 2001-2004. There has been talks that there is an equal ratio to ice lost vs ice gained. However a recent study proves that the radio is in fact negative, Greenland is losing more ice than it gains. The 2.85 million km3 (100.600.000.000 million of cubic feet) ice sheet is at risk of melting, if this happens oceans will rise 6-7 metres (20-23 feet).
