The Lessons of the Alchemist By: Dean Keeler

“There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.” (pg 141)

This quote was spoken by the Alchemist towards Santiago. It. explains that anything is possible as long as you are willing to strive to achieve it. This relates to my life when I started basketball two years ago. Before that I played soccer and when I was offered to play basketball I was afraid I would not be any good. I almost did not play because I was comfortable with playing soccer. Eventually from constant encouragement from my parents and the main coach of the Marina basketball I went to my first practice. After that day I knew this was the right choice. Since that day I still am playing and have made great improvements, including making Varsity.

“When you want something, all of the universe conspires to help you achieve it.” (pg 22)

This was spoken by the Old King to Santiago. This quote explains that when you are willing to strive as hard as you can, everything around you seems to move to help you achieve your final destination. In my life for the past year and a half I have been working very hard at excelling at basketball. Since then I have become a way better basketball player, and throughout the last 6 month I have been getting better and stronger faster. This could be from the universe wanting me to get better because of the amount of effort I put into basketball.

“There is only one way to learn...It’s through action. Everything you need to know you have learned through your journey.” (pg 125)

This quote is spoken by the Alchemist. This quote states an easy to understand truth about life, it is experience that allows the true learning of a subject. In class we discussed different experiences that people couldn’t learn about from reading. Like riding a bike, spear fishing, and emotions. In my own way I learn from experience better than reading and listening when I play basketball. This especially comes into play when learning new plays, running the play personally makes it easier to learn that listening to what I am supposed to do.

“Wherever your heart is, that is where you’ll find your treasure.” (pg. 129)

This was spoken by the Alchemist to Santiago. This quote shows me that if you want something with all your heart you will find it. Think about your heart as the leader and if you follow it, it will show you where to go. We understand that Santiago is weary about listening to his heart because emotions are like rollercoasters. But the text suggests that if we keep listening and paying attention to what makes us happy, we will be successful. When choosing what sport to play in high school, I was torn between soccer and basketball. I couldn't choose both because they were in the same season. I spent two weeks going back and forth and I finally went with what my heart was saying, basketball. I followed my heart and so far it has paid off, with more to come.

“The secret of life, though, is to fall seven times and to get up eight times.” (pg VII Introduction)

This quote was in the introduction when Paulo Coelho was explaining his journey to becoming a world known author. This quote explains no matter how many times you fail, you always have to get right back on to your feet. This goes along with a famous saying that says, "The darkest hour is right before dawn.".

“What you still need to know is this: before a dream is realized, the Soul of the World tests everything that was learned along the way. It does this not because it is evil, but so that we can, in addition to realizing our dreams, master the lesson we’ve learned as we’ve moved toward that dream.” (pg 136)

This was spoken by the Alchemist to Santiago about the last thing he needs to learn about the soul of the world. This shows me that soul of the world puts obstacles before you to truly test your abilities to achieve your goal. Your goal is never just a straight line there are bends and forks in the road to success, it depends on how you compensate for the detours that makes you achieve or miss your end goal. This quote relates to a different saying of practice makes perfect. The way each saying relates is the Soul of the World makes you use every skill you have learned to master it and if you practice things to perfection you master that skill.

“To show you one of life’s lessons… When you possess great treasures within you, and try to tell others of them, seldom are they believed.”

“Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself."
