RACE FOR THE SCHOOLS

The fifth annual MCSD Race for the Schools - 5K and Muskie Mile fun run was held on Saturday, May 6th at the Muscatine High School. This event is designed to promote physical fitness within the community of Muscatine and the Muscatine Community School District. All proceeds from this fundraiser will filter directly back to MCSD students. Funds will be designated to support physical education and student wellness. Thank you to all who volunteered, donated prizes and/or provided a sponsorship, and especially a big shout out to those who participated in the race!

Congratulations to the overall male and female winners (see picture below), corporate winner: Kent/GPC, and the school challenge winner: Colorado Elementary!

PARENTS AS TEACHERS

Parents as Teachers have fun while learning during home visits.

COLORADO ELEMENTARY

Mrs. Hines Kindergarten hosted Muffins With Moms this morning. Students could have Mom, Grandma, Aunt, or friends come and join them for a special breakfast!

Mrs. Coss' students at Colorado celebrated their growth on the FAST Assessment with a "Smart Cookie" party.

Students in Mrs. Yahn's 3rd grade class were very busy. Below are pictures from their Environmental Day and their field trip to Blackhawk State Park as well as a fun photo at school!

FRANKLIN ELEMENTARY

Franklin's Student Leadership Team served breakfast for staff during Staff Appreciation Week!

Franklin's 1st and 5th Graders visited the University of Iowa's campus last week.

Students in Mrs. Fick's 5th Grade class visited Discovery Center.

Franklin's All School Carnival was held and everyone had a great time!

Franklin 5th Graders held their end-of-the-year recognition luncheon with special chefs Jeanne Johnson and Mrs. Calderon! The chefs cooked a hot lunch of pulled pork, cheesy potatoes, salad and rolls in honor of the 5th grade moving onto middle school!

GRANT ELEMENTARY

Students in Mrs. Newhall's preschool class enjoyed meeting the animals at Kiddie Barnyard last week. The high school students did an excellent job telling the students about the different kinds of animals too!

Grant's Kindergarten Girl Scouts made the world a better place today...they synergized and planted flowers in our garden area.

Mrs. Dusenberry's First Grade SUPER HEROS! We all decided that when wearing super hero capes while learning, we CAN DO ANYTHING!! Students came up with a WIn-WIN so all students had a chance to wear the capes throughout the month when feeling like they needed SUPER POWERS!!

Grant's 3rd-5th graders had a Read and Feed!

MADISON ELEMENTARY

The Preschool and Kindergarten students at Madison Elementary enjoyed Muffins with Mom to celebrate Mother's Day!

Madison 3rd Graders enjoyed Black Hawk State Park on Wednesday. We went to the Hauberg Indian Museum, learned about interesting facts about Iowa animals, and when the rain broke we took a nature hike.

Madison 5th graders took a field trip to the Grout Museum in Waterloo. They learned to fly an airplane in a virtual simulator, worked as a team to put bolts together, and got to see a bull python up close and personal.

McKINLEY ELEMENTARY

Fifth grade students in Mrs. Franklin's class met with their 1st grade buddies this week!

MULBERRY ELEMENTARY

Mulberry DHH students in Mrs. Story's class had an 8 man tent set up for language integration. Other general education classrooms used the tent as a PBIS reward for students who were meeting expectations. Way to go kids of Mulberry!

Students in Mrs. Evan's Kindergarten Class synergized in their Math Center.

DISTRICT-WIDE MIDDLE SCHOOL

Eighty middle school Rock Orchestra students from CMS & WMS attended Music in the Parks competition at Six Flags in Chicago. They performed strong, and received 1st place in their division! Congrats to all of these students!

West and Central Middle School Gifted/Talents students displayed their passion projects to the public at Musser Public Library on Monday. Parents and students from Muscatine and Mercer County enjoyed seeing what students were passionate about learning. The display was not a contest or a competition, just a celebration of the love of learning.

CENTRAL MIDDLE SCHOOL

Central Middle School 6th Grade Ricochet Leadership group and a group of 7th grade ELA Honors boys served the Muscatine community by helping out at the YMCA's Annual Elementary School Dance. They assisted with various activities and helped out with concessions. All monies made were donated to the new Teen Center. They all did an excellent job and had a great time.

MUSCATINE HIGH SCHOOL

Congratulations to the over 500 students who were recognized at Thursday morning's Academic Awards Assembly for their hard work and dedication to academic excellence!!

Great job to senior Camilla McNeely, who received a 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program Commendation! (pictured with MHS principal, Dr. Jared Smith).
Congratulations to Melissa Burzlaff, Jacob Cawiezell, and Hailey Day who were recognized by Sprouse Distributing for 4 years of perfect attendance!
Congrats to these eight MHS seniors who earned the MVRBC Gallon Grad Award, presented by Amy Kent: Brianna Casteel, Jacob Cawiezell, Hailey Day, Logan Nugent, Morghyn Riley, Sarah Spellman, Adam Spiegel, and Hannah Whitworth!
Great job to these 39 seniors who exemplified high academic achievement my taking 5 (or more) AP classes during their high school career!

Ten Grant Elementary educators attended The Leader in Me Symposium RETHINK LEADERSHIP in Cedar Falls with MCSD Director of Teaching and Learning Becky Wichers this week. Grant's building focus on shared leadership permeates everything we do!
