Students are stressed more than ever Catherine Kiefer

"No matter the person, or how old you are, you will get stressed out."

Two essays and a test all on the same day. Personally, that screams stress to me. No matter who you are you are, going to have stress. Stress can come in many different ways, whether it is the work load you have or feeling like you don’t fit in. If you had to guess, would you say that teenagers or adults have more stress? Everyone's opinion is different. Students feel pressured to be the best of the best. They feel pressured to go to the best college and get the best grades. Not only does school stress out students, but the pressure to be socially accepted contributes to stress. Normally, adults are stressed out because of work, or their children. No matter the person, or how old you are, you will get stressed out. However, studies show that teenagers are more stressed out than adults.

American Psychological Association on Stress.
"Scored on a ten point scale, the agency’s stress in America survey shows that teenagers have a average stress level of 5.8, while adults have a stress level of 5.1."

Studies have shown that teenagers are more stressed out than adults. Scored on a ten point scale, the agency’s stress in America survey shows that teenagers have a average stress level of 5.8, while adults have a stress level of 5.1. The main thing that stresses out teenagers is school, because of the pressure to be the best. Students feel like if they don’t have good enough grades, they will not get into a good college and won’t succeed in life. Students now learn at a much more accelerated rate compared to when their parents went to school. Teachers put a lot of pressure on the students by giving so many assignments. The assignments now are more difficult than when our parents went to school because the curriculum is now harder. It is hard to juggle eight classes that all have a lot of work in them. School is not the only reason teenagers are stressed, teenagers feel pressured to fit in socially. School can be a place where students get stressed or anxious because they don’t fit in with other students. A freshman at UCLA said that stress in some ways can be a competition. It can be a competition because teenagers are always saying “I’m so stressed” but then their friends will say “no I am way more stressed than you”. By teenagers doing this it comes as a self-fulfillment to teenagers to see who is more stressed.School is suppose to be a “safe place” , but most of the time, it is a place that bring kids misery. Teenagers should not be more stressed out than adults, it should be an equal amount of stress.

A person stressed caused from school.
"When our parents were younger they were probably stressed because of the work load, however our workload is doubled and there work load can not be compared to ours."

When our parents went to school they did not have nearly as much stress as students now a day have. School is now much harder than it was when our parents in school. Since school is nothing like it use to be, our parents do not get why their children are under so much stress. “My parents are always saying, “When they were in school, when they were in school,” but I can show them my math homework and they have no clue how to do it,” Galeazi said. The workload is a lot heavier and the work is a lot harder”. When our parents were younger they were probably stressed because of the work load, however our workload is doubled and there work load can not be compared to ours. When our parents were in school, it was also easier to get into college. Even though our parents had to take the SATS when they were in school, they have now changed and are harder than ever. Not only are the SATS now harder but getting into college is now more difficult. When our parents were in school it was okay if they did not attend college, but now you are looked down upon, because you went against what society thinks is right. If you choose not to go to college it is much harder to find a good paying job without a degree. When parents were younger, if they didn’t go to college it was easier to find a job where you don’t need a degree. School is the main source of stress for kids.

One test score can determine your future.
"Some people like to get rid of their stress by going out and partying, while others like having down time to relieve their stress."

How do you deal with stress? Everyone deals with stress differently. Some people like to get rid of their stress by going out and partying, while others like having down time to relieve their stress. One way schools can help relieve the students from being so stressed is by reducing the amount of homework they have. The majority of students do after school activities like sports and work. Students will go straight from school to their extra-curricular activities, then be home late in the evening. Which leaves them no time work on school or socialize, so there only option is to stay up all night making them get no sleep. By giving students less homework, it will give them the ability to relieve stress. If the school does not want to give less homework, they should replace gym with a study hall for kids who participate in extracurricular activities. The students would have to fill out a form and have it signed from their superior. Students can also relieve stress by listening to music, or doing things they enjoy. Another way that students can relieve their stress outside of school is by doing something they enjoy. By doing something they enjoy they will forget about all of their stress. People can also relieve stress by letting their feelings out. Lastly, teenagers can relieve stress by meditating, or by talking about how they feel . These are some ways for students to deal with stress.

"Do you think that teenagers should be the ones to be so stressed out or should adults be the ones to be stressed out?"

Even though everyone gets stressed, students are statistically are more stressed out than any other age group. Students have the stress of being the best of the best and to get into the best college. This shows that school is the main source of stress for teenagers. Adults are stressed by work and taking care of their children. No matter the person or how old you are you will always get stressed out. Parents will never understand the stress, their kids are under because they never went through this much stress in school. When they were in school it was stressful but. School now is much harder. Whether it is the pressure to fit in or the pressure to get the best grades. Teenagers should not have to deal with all of this stress, they are too young. People should not be this stressed out at such a young age. Do you think that teenagers should be the ones to be so stressed out or should adults be the ones to be stressed out?

Everyone should have a stress free zone.
