Desert Willow Elementary Learning for life and loving to learn February 24, 2021

February is Black History Month, and students have been able to explore notable figures in history that helped shape America. However, we know that learning about history and culture doesn't just end at the school doors. In a time when cultural tensions are at an all time high, cultural learning is crucial for children to increase knowledge and empathy in an effort to build bridges across differences. As adults, we have the power to create, to teach, to maintain bias—and to eliminate it. By exploring the stories and rich history of Black people in America, this can equip children with the tools to resist negative messages based on people’s racial identities and/or physical differences. Celebrating Black History Month is the perfect opportunity to expand your children’s awareness of other’s racial differences while encouraging them to be open and respectful of all kinds of people they may encounter. From a mental health perspective, those who have high levels of empathy are more likely to function well in society. Research shows that empathy is vital in building successful interpersonal relationships of all types.

Roadrunners are Respectful, Responsible, & Kind

This month, our school wide theme is empathy. We’ll be reminding students to have empathy, identify their own and others’ feelings, notice and respect the same and different feelings, and show compassion. When students can identify, understand, and respond in a caring way to how someone else is feeling, it helps create a positive and accepting school climate.

You can extend this idea at home by talking about your own feelings and modeling empathy for others.
