Unleash Your Activist!

April 7, 2017

Downtown Silver Spring

We’ve Seen This Before

Sunday, April 23, 10am. Unleash Your Activist! has invited Ruth Messinger, Global Ambassador for American Jewish World Service, to discuss how Jewish history can inform democratic activism in America today. RSVP here. Ideas for collaborative actions to take immediately following her talk are welcome; contact Devora.

Canvass for Ossoff

Our friends at JWalkers Action Group and DoTheMostGood have been asked by the Jon Ossoff for Congress Campaign in Georgia to recruit two busloads of dedicated Montgomery County canvassers to knock on doors and get out the vote. The election is Tuesday, April 18. Canvassers will travel down to Georgia on Thursday, April 13 by bus, canvass on Friday and Saturday and then travel home on Sunday, April 16. The Ossoff campaign is covering travel costs and arranging housing for those who want it. Sign up to canvass.

In case you don’t know the Jon Ossoff special election story, here’s a snapshot in People’s World. The race has energized Georgia voters and created a whole new crop of activists. And this election is being watched closely as it is the first vote for a federal office since Mr. Trump assumed the presidency.

Supplies for Refugees

Three ways to help!

  • Furnish an apartment for an arriving refugee family. Sign up to donate specific items here, and contact Regina if you would like to deliver items early.
  • Complete the picture for a family that has already arrived: bikes, scooters, helmets, sports balls, first aid items, craft supplies, child safety gizmos, coolers. Contact Amy.
  • Baby supplies are always in need. JPDS-NC students are collecting items to bring to the IRC. Bring the following to the April 23 Unleash Your Activist! meeting or drop them off at JPDS-NC by April 28: packs of diapers, baby wipes, small toys, pacifiers (new), bibs, cleaning kit items (trash bags, paper towels, sponges, mops and brooms, all-purpose cleaner, trash can, laundry soap, dish soap). No clothing or blankets, please.

Support the Maryland Trust Act

The Maryland House of Delegates has passed the Maryland Trust Act, but Governor Hogan has threatened to veto it, so it is vital that we continue our advocacy: first, by getting this bill out of committee in the state senate. Use this easy-to-use tool to send a letter to your state senators and delegates - then share with anyone you know in Baltimore County.

Resistance Saturdays

April 15 - Demand Trump’s tax returns.

April 22 - March for Science

April 29 - People’s Climate March

Make the most of whatever time you can spare. Check the Resistance Calendar.

Did you take action? Do you spot progress? Do you have an action item to share? Write in by Tuesday for next week’s newsletter. Thanks to all who provided info for this one!
