Welcome to Ring Patterns, the Colliesonline.com feature in which we re-cap, month by month, the general achievements of the breed at specialties and all-breeds throughout the country. In August, at the all-breed shows, collies came away with one Reserve Best In Show for the smooth dog, GCHB Qualteri Lazurite Island Tryst, under judge Susan Godek. With 1683 dogs in competition at this show in Greeley, Colorado this was one of the month's largest all-breed shows. Collies also accrued 21 Herding Group placements, 1 National Owner-handled Series (NOHS) Reserve Best Owner-handled in Show, and 23 National Owner-handled Series placements.

Reserve Best in Show went to GCHB Qualteri Lazurite Island Tryst at Greeley KC on August 18.

Collies accrued 21 Herding Group placements with five Group 1 awards going to the smooth dog, GCHG Travler Sugarnspice Witches Do Come Blue (New Jersey), rough dog, GCH Kiriko's Rock Star (New York), smooth dog, GCHB Qualteri Lazurite Island Tryst. (Colorado) and smooth bitch, GCH Headline's Flair For The Dramatic (Michigan). The judges who selected the collie as the top herding dog of the day were: Ann Yuhasz, Cathy Daugherty, Peri Norman, Bill Daugherty and Butch Schulman.

GCHG Travler Sugarnspice Witches Do Come Blue was awarded one of the five Group 1s under Ann Yuhasz at Hunterdon Hills Kennel Club on August 4, along with three other Group placements.

A total of 13 collies recorded placements in August – 5 rough, including a class dog and class bitch and 8 smooths. The placements included five Group 2s, three Group 3s, and eight Group 4s. Of all the placements, the Rough Variety came away with a ribbon 9 times compared to 11 for the Smooth Variety.

Colorado was the state with the largest entries of herding dogs in the country. The largest number of herding dogs shown at a show in which a collie placed was the previously mentioned Colorado show in which 261 herding dogs took the stage. It was at Greeley KC in Greeley, Colorado. The award was a Group 1 and eventually led to the Reserve Best In Show. The award went to the smooth dog, GCHB Qualteri Lazurite Island Tryst. The Herding Group judge was Peri Norman.

Butch Schulman was the only Herding Group judge that placed both varieties in the same group on the same day. It was at Southern Indiana Kennel Club in Owensboro, Kentucky on August 25 with 115 Herding dogs shown on the day. The smooth bitch, GCHB Calibre's Gold Digger placed second and the rough class bitch, Braeton's By The Light Of The Moon placed fourth.

National Owner-handled Series

GCH Romany's Curb Your Enthusiasm was awarded this months only NOHS Reserve Best Owner-handled in Show at Sugarbush KC in Madison, Ohio under Judge Sue-Ellyn Rempel.

The NOHS Reserve Best Owner-handled in Show was awarded to GCH Romany's Curb Your Enthusiasm at Sugarbush Kennel Clubin Ohio under judge Sue-Ellyn Rempel. In NOHS competition, Herding Group judges placed collies 23 times. The placements included six Group 1s, two for the Rough Variety and four for the Smooth Variety. Smooths took 18 placements and the roughs took 5.

GCH Oak Knolls Burning Secret CDX RE NAJ NF CA was awarded a NOHS Group 1 at Kennel Club of Freeborn County, Minnesota under judge Mary Murphy-East.
