VOLLEYBALL GOES 2-1 ON OPENING WEEKEND

The Lander volleyball team set the tone in the season opener with a dominant first set and rode the momentum to a 3-0 win over Johnson C. Smith on Friday afternoon at the USC Aiken Opening Weekend Tournament. All 16 players on Lander's roster played in the Bearcat victory.

Freshmen Kaitlyn Krafka and Madilyn Reed enjoyed successful debuts, leading the Bearcats in kills and assists. Krafka finished with 16 kills and Reed tallied 33 assists in the win. Junior Hannah McManus recorded a team-high 19 digs.

On Saturday, junior Reilly Kuenstler posted six kills and 2.0 blocks, while freshman Sadie Davis recorded a pair of service aces in a 3-0 loss to Barry.

The Bearcats rebounded with a 3-0 sweep of Mount Olive at the Augusta Tournament on Sunday afternoon.

Hannah Hritz had 13 kills and hit .464 on an error-free day to lead the Bearcats. Kaitlyn Krafka tallied a career-high 15 digs and added 13 kills for her first career double-double, while Madilyn Reed led the team with 33 assists and recorded 12 digs for a double-double. The Bearcats finished the day with 10 service aces, as Reed, Hannah McManus and Boo Luther each tallied three.

Lander returns to action this weekend at the Fleet Classic in Due West, S.C. The Bearcats will face rival Erskine and West Georgia on Friday before playing Virginia-Wise and North Greenville on Saturday.

MADILYN REED, PBC SPECIALIST OF THE WEEK

Madilyn Reed was named the Peach Belt Conference Specialist of the Week for the first week of the season.

Reed, a 5-9 freshman from Graniteville, S.C., averaged 10.11 assists per set and recorded a double-double with 33 assists and 12 digs in Sunday's win over Mount Olive. She also recorded 33 assists in her collegiate debut against Johnson C. Smith on Friday. Reed currently leads the PBC in assists per set and ranks third in the conference with 91 assists on the year, as well as ranking 16th in digs per set. She has also added three kills, three service aces and a block assist.

MEN'S SOCCER PICKED 1ST IN PRESEASON PBC POLL

The 12th-ranked Lander men's soccer team was picked first in the Peach Belt Conference preseason coaches poll, tallying 47 points and five first-place votes.

Lander's regular-season home opener is on Friday, Aug. 31 at 7:00 p.m. against Alabama-Huntsville. Admission is free and the Kid's Zone will be open from 6:30-8:15 p.m., featuring train rides, face painting, a balloon artist and inflatables. In addition, the Sports Break tent will also be open from 6:30-8:15 p.m and will sell beer and wine to patrons 21 and older with a valid I.D.

The Lander women's soccer team opens the 2018 season on Thursday, August 30, at North Greenville. The Bearcats play their first home match on Saturday, September 1, against Mars Hill. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

2018-19 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL SCHEDULE RELEASED

The Lander women's basketball team's path for a fifth straight NCAA Tournament appearance was officially established on Monday afternoon with the complete 2018-19 schedule release. The schedule features 13 home contests, seven games against NCAA Tournament teams from last season and two in-state exhibitions against Division I opponents.

NEW HALL OF FAME NOMINATION PROCESS

To celebrate the rich history of athletics excellence at Lander spanning more than 50 years, Lander Athletics has established a new Hall of Fame nomination process that will be put into effect during the 2018-19 academic year.

Nominations for the Lander Athletics Hall of Fame are now being accepted through September 30, 2018, in four distinct categories: student-athletes, coaches, staff, and community members who played a significant role in the development of Lander Athletics The seven-member selection committee, consisting of alumni, coaches and staff, will announce the new class on November 1, 2018, and Lander Athletics will host a Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on February 23, 2018.
