Be Thankful this Thanksgiving

By Jessica B.

We all enjoy celebrating Thanksgiving in the United States with delicious food like candied yams, roasted beef, ham, turkey, collard greens, pies, macaroni and cheese, cranberry sauce, ham and all the delicious food BUT hold up!! Do we really know the real truth about Thanksgiving? I’m going to talk about the history of Thanksgiving and suggest two challenges to help us all to be more grateful this fall.

The first Thanksgiving started in the new colonies with the pilgrims. It took place on the fourth Thursday of November. Four hundred year ago the pilgrims held the first Thanksgiving. They came to America from another country. They worked really hard when they got to America. The pilgrims learned how to grow corn and beans from the Native Americans. The pilgrims were thankful for a new life. When the summer ended they had delicious food in their gardens. The pilgrims had a large gathering with lots of food in the fall to give many reasons to be thankful. Now in 2018 people still eat a special meal on Thanksgiving and they eat many different kinds of delicious food.

This year, I want to create a challenge for all of you to be more grateful. We all love food, but it is important that we also take the time to be thankful for all the people and things that we have in our lives.

Challenge 1: 21 one day photo challenge

Take pictures of all the things you are grateful for. Do this for 21 days in a row. Some examples of things you can take pictures of are family members, supermarket, friends, pets, school, clothing, and money.

Challenge 2: Gratitude journal challenge

Every day for 21 days, write down 1 thing you are thankful for before bed. Here are some examples:

“I am thankful that I am healthy.”

“I am thankful I can go to school to get an education.”

“I am thankful for having food on table.”

“I am thankful for have clothes on my back.”

I hope you remember that the Thanksgiving holiday is not just not about the food. It’s about what you are thankful for. Try one of these challenges this November so we can see what you’re thankful for this Thanksgiving.

Who’s ready for Thanksgiving? I know I am. Send us your favorite pictures and your favorite posts from your gratitude journal to eworsley@obs.org and we’ll share the top ones in our next newspaper!

Fallen in Fall

By Tierra H.

Let me tell you a story, it's a little crazy. You might not think so because you haven't lived it. Last winter Mya went out looking for love, but she didn't find it. She dated some guy named Tim for a month but honestly that wasn't love. During the spring time Mya was ready to fight love because she didn't feel like she was good enough for anyone to love her. Summer time came around Mya was completely done with love, so she decided to find a boy best friend. Who would have known her best friend Jackson, also known as ‘J’, would be the one for her?

It was Mya's summer before Senior year and Jackson has just moved in to the neighborhood. Jackson had shiny black hair, green eyes, and one of the best smiles that any guy had in the neighborhood. Every girl wanted Jackson, but Mya got him as her best friend. Mya had dark brown hair with natural blond highlights, baby blue eyes, and she also had a beautiful smile. When J. and Mya first started hanging out it was innocent but then after a while Mya found out J. liked her and didn't want to just be friends. Jackson and Mya started cuddling on the couch and watching movies. Mya thought it was just in a friendly way, but Jackson was falling in love with her every time he held her. Mya started to catch feelings for Jackson in the beginning of her Senior year, when he started hanging out with this other girl that liked him. What Mya didn't know is that Jackson only started hanging out with the other girl, so he could make her jealous. Jackson stopped hanging out with Mya because he couldn't handle just being friends with her. Every time he saw her, he wanted to hug her and kiss her. He wanted to tell all his friends that he got the girl of his dreams. Mya gave up on love in the spring time, but the fall season got her fallen again. After Mya went home and yelled at herself in the mirror, she decided she was falling for Jackson and she couldn't hide it anymore. You'll have to read the next newspaper to find out what happens.

The End.

E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!

By Angela C.

The Super Bowl was so awesome last season in 2018. The Eagles had a fantastic season. The Eagles are in the National Football League. Doug Pederson is the Eagles head coach. He helped the Eagles with their plays during the games throughout the football season. The Eagles won the playoffs last year and they made it in to the championships for the Super Bowl. At the end of the Super Bowl game, they won the championships. They were officially called the Super Bowl champs.

Before they made it to the playoffs, people called the Eagles the underdogs, which means that they are a team in a sport that is expected to not win a game. The Eagles beat the Patriot’s 41 to 33 in the Super Bowl game on February 4, 2018. Carson Wentz was the Eagles’ starting quarterback and he had a knee injury during the football season. He had a torn ACL in his knee, which can take a real long time to heal up, so he was not able to play with his team for a while. Even though the team lost one of their most valuable players, they were still able to make it to the Super Bowl and win with the help of Nick Foles!

This year, the Eagles are doing awesome so far. It is only the beginning of the football season for the Eagles. After winning the Super Bowl last year, Eagles fans are feeling super excited and pumped. They were all fired up the for the parade! Their excitement continues this season. We hope you’re cheering on our Philadelphia team for another victory in Super Bowl LIII.

What can you do on football Sundays? Well... let me tell you. There are a lot of things you can do to celebrate while you watch the games. You can order out pizza, wings, and/or cheesesteaks for you to eat during the Eagle’s games. If you don’t feel like ordering out, you can have some friends and family over and have a barbeque before the game starts. You could also make mozzarella sticks to eat during the game or Super Bowl game.

The most fun thing you can do to celebrate the Eagles game wins, is to sing the Eagles Fight Song. Here are the lyrics to help you sing along!

Fly, Eagles fly

On the road to victory.

Fly, Eagles fly

Score a touchdown 1, 2, 3.

Hit ‘em low,

Hit ‘em high,

And watch our Eagles Fly.

Fly, Eagles fly

On the road to victory!

Philadelphia Marathon

By Angel M.

The first marathon races started in 1896 during the Olympic Games. More than 800 marathons are held throughout the world each year. People that participate in it must run 26 miles. The world record for running a marathon is under two hours. That is a very long distance that you have to run. They even have to do it without stopping. Some people take 12 hours just to do one marathon. Running a marathon is very fun but very challenging. Many people around the world participate in marathons. People also do marathons for competition and exercise. When someone finishes a marathon they should be proud of themselves. Children, adults, and people with disabilities can all participate in marathons.

The Philadelphia Marathon for this year is not starting until November 18th of this year. It will also be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the marathon in this city. The first-place winner wins 10,000 dollars. It begins at 7 o'clock AM and it costs $150.00 dollars to register. It starts at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Everyone that participates get a shirt and drinks. Whoever finishes gets a medal and a certificate. You should really come and join this year’s marathon because it will be lots of fun. When it starts we should remember to cheer all of the runners on!

A Poem About Fall

By Nicholas L.

Fall is my favorite season.

It is my favorite season because school starts, and leaves are coming off trees.

I like fall because it is getting ready for the cold.

I like fall because it is when my mom’s birthday is.

I like fall because it means Christmas is coming soon.

I like fall because that is when Thanksgiving is.

I love Thanksgiving because that is when my dad’s sister and her family come to our house for a long weekend.

I like fall because in fall we do lots of fun things at school.

I like Christmas because we have a long break from school, and we get lots of gifts on Christmas.

I like fall because it means that winter is coming soon.

I like fall because it means soon it will be very cold and the heat will be on in my house.

I love fall because in the morning the air is chilly, and it gets a little bit warmer during the day. Fall starts in October and ends in December. Fall ends four days before Christmas.

I love fall because crickets stop making noise, so I can sleep better.

I love fall because birds fly south so that helps me not wake up so early.

I love fall because it is when you start to bring out your warm clothes, and I love warm clothes.

I love fall because it is when people start getting ready for the holidays.

I love fall because people start thinking about Halloween and what they want to dress up as.

I love fall because people buy many things to eat and people have lots of parties and do lots of fun things.

I love fall because people come to other families houses to hang out and have fun with them.

In fall people start coming together as a big family.

In fall, we have a big dinner at our house for Thanksgiving with many people. The funny thing is we don't have turkey on Thanksgiving we have chicken, but we have everything else people have on Thanksgiving, we have stuffing, mash potatoes, gravy, and cranberry sauce.

I love fall because my brother comes home for a long time.

After this year both my brother and my sister will have to come home because my sister is going to college and she won't be at home.

I love fall and I wish it could always be fall.

Vincent, Mia, and Nick learned all about apples and how to turn them into fall treats!

2018 Elections

By Ethan R.

This year in 2018 the United States elections will be held on November 6. Have you ever wanted to find out what the elections are about?

The elections are divided into several levels including the House of Representatives, the United States Senate, state governors, and city mayors. There are 435 members of the United States House of Representatives to be voted for, one third of the United States Senate, 36 state governors and many city mayors. There are 2 different kinds of elections: congressional elections and midterm elections.

Congressional elections affect your state’s representation in Congress. Congress is the branch of the government that includes the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Midterm elections are federal elections where voters choose Congress members but not a new president. Midterms are held halfway between presidential elections. The next Congressional elections are on November 6th and they are midterm elections.

There are a couple differences between being a member of the House of Representatives and being a member of the Senate. To be a member of the House of Representatives, you must serve 2-year terms meaning that all 435 representatives are elected in both presidential and midterm election years. To be elected, a representative must be at least 25 years old, a United States citizen for at least 7 years, and live in the state he or she represents.

To be a member of the United States Senate, you must serve 6-year, overlapping terms. One third of all United States senators are elected each year during midterm and presidential election years. To be elected, a senator must be at least 30 years old, a United States citizen for at least 9 years, and live in the state he or she represents.

Tune in to your local television station for the 2018 elections on November 6. If you are 18, get out there and vote!

Just the Two of Them

By Breanna A.

There is a girl name Skyler and she knew how to sing.

Her voice is like a million angels harmonizing.

One day she met a boy name Milo, he had a crush on her and he too knew how to rap.

The next day Milo had an idea that he could make up a song to tell Skyler how he felt about her. Then a couple days later Milo seen Skyler and gave her the song he wrote, Skyler was surprised and felt special at the same time. They began singing to each other as he asked her out on a date. That special moment began for them that the two will never forget.

That a new harmony was started for Milo and Skyler…. That the two continue to sing forever more.

How to Stay Safe While on Social Media

By Gabby Z.

It is very important to be safe while you are on the internet. There are people out there in the world that can steal important information such as usernames and passwords. They can also post inappropriate photos and or comments in your profile. Once it is posted you can't do anything about it. Even if you think you have deleted it, many people may have already seen it. Another reason to be safe on social media is so that strangers do not find out personal information such as where you live.

Here are 5 tips to help you stay safe while you're on social media:

1. Make a strong password by using capital letters, numbers and symbols

2. Be careful on what links you click on, they may be fake

3. Set up security questions for your accounts so that you don’t get locked out

4. It is always important to make sure you sign off when you're finished so no one else can access your account

5. Do not accept requests from people you do not know

If you follow these rules, it will help you and the people you love have fun and stay safe while enjoying the internet.

Daylight Savings Time

By Marques P.

I will be teaching you about daylight-savings time. So, daylight-savings time starts on the second Sunday of March and ends on the first Sunday of November. Daylight-savings time was first thought of by George Hudson. He wanted daylight-savings time to be a thing so people could have more daylight to do important things like farming. George Hudson wanted to add two hours of daylight to each day, but this idea didn’t work out. The United States moves their clocks just one hour ahead or behind. In March we call it spring forward and in November we call it fall back. This year daylight-savings time starts on the fourth of November and you set your clocks back at 2 a.m. Daylight-savings time will make your days longer. When we’re in daylight-savings time there will be one extra hour in your day.

The Swim Team

By Louis T.

This year I decided to join the swim team. In this article I’ll be taking about how I feel about being on the team.

Before this year I didn’t know how to swim so I wasn’t sure about joining the team, but I’m so glad I did. When I first started I couldn’t swim but after a week or two I could swim freestyle and do the backstroke really well. I am so happy I joined the swim team it's good exercise and it’s a lot of fun. We have had three swim meets so far and next up is the tournament.

Check in next time to see how I felt about the tournament.

The person I am today,

To see this happen,

Forever today a party to say,

Die away,

The person I am today.

So let’s all say

Hip-hip hurray

For who I am

To this very day.
