Completely orphaned at the age of 14 David's hobbies were reading the Bible, farming, and praying

Enrolled at Yale one of best of class but got dismissed for criticizing a tutor saying "you have no more grace than a chair."

After being expelled from school, Brainerd went to study with pastor Jeddidiah Mills to later be licensed for preaching.

David Brainerd died on October 9, 1747 in Northampton Massachusetts at the very young age of 29.

what inspired him to serve in his missions

When he didn't finish his education Brainerd got a job as a preacher. One day, one of his friends told him about the Indians.

Brainerd worked with the Kaunameck Indians which were located in between Stockbridge, Massachusetts and Albany, NY. He worked as hard as he could to be able to reach them; he even learned their language. But he had no success. So he went to the Denver Indians of Pennsylvania. Still, he had no success. His next group of Indians, that were located near Trenton, listened intently to him. He was amazed at the immediate response they gave him. He poured out all his knowledge to these Indians and soon built them a church, school, carpenter shop and informatory

Brainerd's diary got published and influenced many different missionaries.

Sadly David Brainerd achieved no awards while he was alive but he did get the pride of having planted a seed in the Native American's hearts by his sermons.
