The importance of Formative Assessment and SMART Targets
We are now in our Formative Assessment window until Friday 11th October. What this means is that every teacher across the school will be carrying out ongoing assessments that will help them understand where your child is in regard to their Knowledge, Skills and Understanding. The advantages of formative assessments are that teachers can carry out a range of different assessments that don't rely on students feeling they are being tested again and again.
Nos encontramos en fechas de Evaluación Formativa, hasta el Viernes 11 de Octubre. Esto supone que todos los profesores del colegio van a estar llevando a cabo evaluaciones que les van a ayudar a saber en qué punto están sus alumnos en términos de Conocimientos, Habilidades y Comprensión. Las ventajas de las evaluaciones formativas son que los profesores pueden desarrollar una variada gama de pruebas que los alumnos no consideran una nueva tanda de exámenes.
Formative assessment gives us an early indicator of where students are now and what support they need to receive in order to get better. It allows us to identify strengths and areas for development as well as a better understanding of individual learning styles. As teachers it also allows us to become better at understanding where our students need to be at the end of a term and at the end of a year.
La evaluación formativa nos proporciona un indicador temprano de dónde están los alumnos y qué apoyo necesitan para mejorar. Nos permite identificar los puntos fuertes y las áreas en las que se necesita incidir, además de saber más sobre los distintos estilos de aprendizaje. Como profesores, también nos ayuda a saber qué metas deben alcanzar los alumnos al final de un trimestre o de un año escolar.
Importantly, for our students, it gives them an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge, skills and understanding and the feedback they receive gives them a focus on what they need to get better at. Without formative assessment, we don’t find out how a child is doing until the end of a unit, in what we call Summative Assessment!
Estas evaluaciones, además, son muy esclarecedoras para nuestros alumnos porque les dan la oportunidad de demostrar sus conocimientos, habilidades y comprensión. Y los resultados que reciben les ayuda a centrarse en lo que tienen que mejorar. Sin la evaluación formativa no sabemos en qué punto de aprendizaje se halla un alumno hasta el final de la unidad, en lo que llamamos la Evaluación Sumativa.
Finally, and most importantly formative assessment needs to be ongoing and fully integrated into learning and teaching and as a result, students will be able to improve and get better. The dangers of when you give a grade are that more often than not the learning stops, however through SMART targets the learning continues.
Por último, la evaluación formativa tienen que tener lugar y estar completamente integradas en el proceso de aprender y de enseñar y, en consecuencia, los alumnos podrán mejorar y hacer progresos. Los riesgos de las notas calificativas son que a menudo se detiene el aprendizaje, mientras que a través de los objetivos SMART el aprendizaje continúa.
What does Meeting look like?
Learning is not linear, as humans, we all learn in different ways and learning can have its peaks as well as its troughs. In Primary and Year 7-8 we use the Journey to Mastery Learning scale. In Year 9-13 we use IGCSE & A Level criteria. The individual subject rubrics use the scale above when determining what each stage looks like in their subject. ‘Meeting’ is where we expect students to be according to age-related expectations. ‘Meeting’ is therefore excellent. Should a child go above and beyond what we expect them to do for their age-related expectations then it is only then that we would consider Secure or Mastery. Mastery is achieving well and above meeting and is rare. Here are six stages of the Journey to Mastery.
Aprender no es algo lineal. Como seres humanos, todos aprendemos de forma diferente y el aprendizaje tiene sus altibajos. En Primaria y en los cursos de Year 7 y Year 8 utilizamos los parámetros de aprendizaje “Journey to Mastery”. En los cursos que van de Year 9 a Year 13 utilizamos los criterios de evaluación empleados para los IGCSE y A Level. Las programaciones de cada asignatura emplean la escala “Journey to Mastery” para determinar qué conocimientos/habilidades se tienen en cada etapa. “Aprobar” significa que esperamos que nuestros alumnos cumplan con los objetivos que se prevén para su edad. “Aprobar” es, por tanto, excelente. Si un alumno va más allá de lo que esperamos para su edad es cuando consideraremos que está en la fase de “Secure” o “Mastery”. “Mastery” es cuando se está rindiendo realmente bien y cualquier cosa por encima de “Meeting” es algo extraordinario. He aquí las 6 etapas del “Journey to Mastery”.
Target Setting Day: Wednesday 23rd October | Miércoles 23 Octubre
Every teacher will be writing SMART targets; Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound. At the Target Setting Day, every parent with their child will meet either the class teacher or the Form Tutor. In the 15-minute meeting, decisions will be made about what the student needs to focus on and strategies will be discussed about what they are going to be doing in the coming term to allow them to get better. We want the targets to be aspirational as well as achievable, students must be motivated by them to get better.
Todos los profesores van a expresar objetivos SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic & Time-Bound): específicos, medibles, alcanzables, realistas y en un plazo. El día de “Target Setting Day” todos los padres se reunirán, junto con sus hijos, con los profesores y/o tutores. En estas reuniones de 15 minutos se tomarán decisiones sobre en qué debe centrarse el alumno y cuáles son las estrategias que debe emplear durante el trimestre para poder progresar.
Celebrating our success in Music
Mr Bernal, our Music teacher has been busy preparing some of our students for their ABRSM Music Exams which they recently passed with flying colours. Congratulations go to Cesar Yr 8, Adele Yr 7 and Guillermo Yr 6 for passing their piano exams. Cesar not only took his exams in piano but in violin as well for which he obtained a distinction! Dario Yr 10, Luis Yr 8 and Inés Yr 7 also enjoyed success in their piano exams after having studied outside school. Many congratulations go to all of you!
Mr Bernal, nuestro profesor de Música, ha estado atareado preparando a algunos de nuestros alumnos para sus Exámenes de Música de ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music), que han aprobado con méritos de sobra. Nuestra enhorabuena a César de Year 8, Adele de Year 7 y Guillermo de Year 6, por haber superado sus exámenes de piano. César no sólo se presentó a piano, sino a violín, examen en el que obtuvo una distinción. Darío (Year 10), Luis (Year 8) e Inés (Year 7) también ha disfrutado de su éxito en los exámenes, que prepararon externamente. ¡Muchas felicidades a todos!
Our House Coordinator, Mr Jackson is very excited to be working with two excellent Sports Captains this academic year, Pablo and Marta. The role of the Sports Captains is to look for opportunities to create events for students that promote the school house system and bring fun to the school lives of students. They have already had some great ideas, for example, in term 1 they are creating a house football tournament to be held at lunchtimes which will see KS3 house teams face off in 20 minute matches. They are also looking to create a volleyball tournament soon as well. Mr Jackson says “Their energy and passion for sports is a breath of fresh air”. Here is what they had to say about their new roles.
Nuestro Coordinador de las Casas, Mr Jackson, está muy ilusionado de trabajar con dos excelentes Capitanes de Deportes a partir de este año, Pablo y Marta. La función de los Capitanes de Deportes es generar oportunidades de eventos para alumnos que promuevan el sistema de las casas y que traiga algo de diversión a la vida escolar. Ya tienen algunas ideas fantásticas. Por ejemplo, para el primer trimestre van a organizar un torneo de fútbol durante la hora de la comida en el que las casas de KS3 se verán en partidos de 20 minutos. También quieren fundar un torneo de voley muy pronto. Según Mr Jackson, “su energía y pasión por los deportes es un soplo de aire fresco”. He aquí lo que Pablo y Marta dicen de sus nuevos puestos.
“I am a student in Year 10 from the British School of Málaga. I volunteered to be sports captain and I have luckily been chosen for the job. As sports captain, I will encourage people to practise sports by organising tournaments with the help of Mr Jackson and Marta. I hope that this year is going to be a great one full of entertainment and learning”. Pablo

National Day for Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia celebrated their National Day on the 23rd September and we had the honour of representing the school at a celebration organised by the Consulate in Málaga which was held within the beautiful surroundings of the Hacienda del Álamo. We were introduced to the Consul General, Ziad Al Atiyah whilst enjoying the wonderful hospitality of members of our school community.
El 23 de Septiembre se celebra el Día Nacional de Arabia Saudí y tuvimos el honor de asistir como colegio a la celebración que organizó el Consulado de Málaga en el precioso entorno de Hacienda del Álamo. En el evento pudimos saludar al Sr Cónsul General Ziad Al Atiyah, a algunas familias de nuestra comunidad escolar y disfrutar de una hospitalidad incomparable.
