“As I climb onto your back, I will promise not to sting. -- I will tell you what you want to hear, and not mean anything. -- Then I treat you like a dog as I shoot my venom in. -- You pretend you didn't know that I am a scorpion, oh."

  • The album hit #18 on the Billboard 200 chart.
  • The album cover appears to feature The Clintons & George W amongst other politicians of the era.

This song is the perfect metaphor for US foreign policy. It's a sort of parable, and shows why Washington never learns from its blunders abroad. It's in the nature of the state/scorpion to continue to act the same way. As the great Dave Smith would say: "If you want to know who our next enemy is...look at who we're funding today."

This hard hitting song, reminds me of an Aesop's fable, the fox and the scorpion. The scorpion convinces the fox to take him across a river, and even though the fox is hesitant and doesn’t want to get stung, the scorpion promises him that he won’t harm him. Finally the fox thinking he will be ok, gives the scorpion a ride. As he swims across the river he feels a sharp sting. As the poison takes effect the fox asks the scorpion why he stung him because now they are both going to die. The scorpion replies, because it is in his nature, after all, he is a scorpion. This is what I think of the average voter. The State and politicians have proven over and over again that they cannot be trusted no matter what they say. “Read my lips, no new taxes,” “I did not have sexual relations with that woman,” and “misson accomplished,” to name a few. The very nature of that State power is corrupt. Participating in the solution, and voting “the right” people in is not going to change the nature of it. No matter what the scorpion says, in the end, you still get a scorpion on your back.

You pretend you didn't know what I was all along. Like an ostritch with its head stuck in the sand, hoping only to be ignored and not draw the eye of Sauron is where people are. They vote every four years in an effort to sway the force of the government in their direction and despite it ignoring their desires to work toward its own...they continue to show up. As corrupting as power is to voters you'd think they'd extrapolate that appropriately in reagards to the politicians themselves, but alas. I'm beyond believing people are this dense. I think it truly is the greed and hubris we all should be aware of in ourselves. A stateless society is long overdue.
