Boston Tea Party And its lasting legacy

A. Background Information

Why did it happen?

In simplest terms, the Boston Tea Party happened as a result of “taxation without representation”, yet the cause is more complex than that.

The American colonists believed Britain was unfairly taxing them to pay for expenses incurred during the French and Indian War. Additionally, colonists believed Parliament did not have the right to tax them because the American colonies were not represented in Parliament.

In this video you will see a person dressed like President Barack Obama wearing a crown. The protestor is unhappy with taxes that the government is collecting. They are making a direct comparison between President Obama and King George III.

F-G. Parallels with Modern Groups

A modern group that is working to limit the power of our federal government is the Tea Party. This is one website that shares the opinions and beliefs of this group. It is also where they organize groups of people for rallies.

Also known as the ACLU, this group works in direct contrast to the Tea Party
