J.R. Briggs Newsletter November 4th, 2020

Thank You Staff and Families

A huge thank you needs to go out to all of the teachers, staff members, and families of the JRB community as our turn to a fully virtual setting went very well. The good news is that we are able to focus all of our energy on one single (yes larger) group of students. The more challenging news is that students are simulating a school day at home. We know this can be very tough, but we also know that these live lessons are our best way to continue our students' progress. Please try to be mindful of the scheduled meeting times. If your child has to miss a meeting due to a prior commitment (like an appointment), please let the teacher know in advance.

Again, we understand the limitations of these schedules and we thank everyone in advance for their flexibility. We hope we can continue to make great strides with the students no matter what the future may hold for us.

More Attendance Information

Your child's attendance is being kept very closely this year and we need your help to make sure it is accurate. If you child is going to miss school for an illness on 'in-school' days or 'out-of-school' days, please call the main office at 978-827-5750 and choose option 3 to leave a message. Please include your child's name, homeroom, and the type of illness he/she is experiencing (this helps the nurse monitor any trends).

The Nurses Note

Influenza Vaccine Requirement for School Attendance:

Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12

Beginning with the 2020-2021 school year, influenza vaccine will be required for all students. Influenza vaccine is always important to receive to reduce the risk of getting sick with influenza, reduce the severity of disease if one does get sick (including the risk of hospitalization) due to influenza, as well as preventing the spread of influenza to others. During the COVID-19 pandemic, influenza vaccine will be especially critical to reduce the overall impact of respiratory illness on the population, protect vulnerable populations from severe illness, and decrease the overall burden on the healthcare system.

Which students need to receive influenza vaccine?

Students in Pre-Kindergarten – Grade 12 will be required to receive influenza vaccine for the current influenza season for school attendance unless they have a medical or religious exemption.

When do students need to receive influenza vaccine?

Students must receive influenza vaccine for the current season by December 31, 2020.

Will influenza vaccine be required every year or just for the 2020-2021 school year?

Influenza vaccine is now a required vaccine for school attendance and will be required as of December 31 for all students in Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12 each school year.

If my school will be providing instruction remotely, will students still need to meet immunization requirements?

The school immunization requirements, including the requirement for seasonal influenza vaccine, apply to all Massachusetts students enrolled in Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12, regardless of whether the district is providing instruction in-person, or using a hybrid or remote learning model.

If your child has received or will be receiving their flu shot, please forward that documentation to the Health Office/Nurse here at school. We encourage everyone to get this important vaccine soon. Massachusetts State Law mandates that all students preK - 12th grade need to receive their flu vaccination by 12/31/20.

Due to current Covid-19 regulations, Beginner Band rehearsals will begin outdoors next spring, which will give our musicians plenty of time to become comfortable with their instruments before playing music with others!

Piano, guitar and voice lessons are also available for students in grades K-5. Please email Mrs. Lordan: mlordan@awrsd.org for more information.
