It was a BANNER week for UChicago in NCAA Championship events -- perhaps one of the best in Maroon Athletics history.

NATIONAL CHAMPION

UChicago senior Khia Kurtenbach - not necessarily the favorite to win - ran the perfect race and captured the 2017 NCAA Division III Women's Cross Country National Championship, becoming only the second runner to do so in Maroons' history and the first since 1996.

The Maroon women's team also had a strong finish, taking 14th place in the 32-team field, 11 places higher than its mark in 2016.

UChicago's four seniors, Khia Kurtenbach, Claire Costelloe, Cassidy McPherson and Kelsey Dunn.

FINAL FOUR BOUND: MEN'S & WOMEN'S SOCCER

The Maroons' women's soccer team clinched its second-straight and fifth overall berth into the NCAA Division III Final Four with a 4-0 win over Wisconsin-La Crosse in the NCAA Quarterfinals Nov. 18.

DOMINATING RUN

The UChicago Women's Soccer team captured two more wins -- and four-straight NCAA Tournament victories without allowing a single goal -- to earn its second-straight and fifth overall trip to the NCAA Division III Final Four.

The UChicago men's soccer team used a riveting 5-3 win in the penalty kick to advance past Emory (1-1 tie after 2 OTs) and earn its second-ever berth into the NCAA Division III Final Four and first since 1996.

WRESTLING

CAROLA SNAGS TITLE

Maroons' sophomore Nick Carola led the way for the wrestling squad at the Concordia-Wisconsin Invitational, winning the 174-pound individual title. In total, four Maroons placed in the tournament.

WHEN: 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2.

  • Sophomore Steve Bonsall placed third in the 157-pound bracket.
  • Sophomores Kahlan Lee-Lermer and Kyle Peisker earned fourth place finishes at 165 and 174, respectively.
Steve Bonsall took third place at 157 pounds.

SWIMMING & DIVING

University of Chicago sophomore Taye Baldinazzo was picked as the CollegeSwimming.com National Swimmer of the Week for NCAA Division III men on Tuesday, while fellow sophomore Byrne Litschgi and first-year Gillian Gagnard earned recognition as UAA Conference Swimmers of the Week after a dominant performance by UChicago at the Phoenix Fall Classic last weekend.

THREE-DAY CHAMPS

Both the University of Chicago men's and women's teams captured team titles at last weekend's three-day Phoenix Fall Classic, shattering five school records and earning 31 NCAA B-Cut times. First-year Margaret Wolfson, right, broke two of those records, setting new marks in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events.

The UChicago men's basketball team opened its 2017-18 campaign with two home victories in Saturday/Sunday's /Midway Classic, as the Maroons topped Rose-Hulman and Trinity.
