Midlife Mountaineers

Each footstep brings us closer to the top of the steep hill, our breath frosty as it gusts out of aching lungs, muscles demanding to stop, but we push forward....

Why do we hike?

We're a group of midlife women dubbed the #midlifemountaineers gathering to hike our local mountains together...there are big dogs, and high energy little dogs, laughter, and most of all support for each other's varying degrees of fitness.

Each of us has our reasons, from hiking for fun, to getting more outdoor exercise, to making the winter pass by faster...

The paths are slippery and there are narrow points where each step must be carefully placed, but the enthusiasm of the dogs never seems to waver.

"Break..."

...someone calls out for a moments rest, and the rest of us gratefully stop to recover our breath....

Perched on the edge of the path, the jingle of bear bells now silent, the only sound is water bottles being opened, and breathing...

Oh.... Thank.....Goood....ness....a voice manages to huff out...

After a few breathes have been taken, and water gulped it's time to give out encouragements to each other,

"we're nearly there, it's easier each time isn't it, I think I can see the top..."

The quiet is like a warm quilt wraped around each bare tree, with long stretches where we are the only signs of life....

Suddenly a flock of chattering cedar waxwings break from their perch high above us, flowing like a stream of water from tree to tree. The feathered creatures circling, and swooping gracefully above our heads...

It's a memorable moment, spent standing on the snowy path, necks craned upwards watching nature move around us.

They swoop and soar...until suddenly they disappear like ...magic...and we are left standing on a snowy path, in a quiet that is all encompassing....

......and that's why we hike...
