Drawing Lessons

Pre-Assessment/ Base Line drawing of a flower, tiger, or an eye. – Title of the assignment and assignment problem to solve statement

After this first drawing assignment I learned that I was better at recreating photos than I thought I was. Although I still have a long way to go, it was nice to see my starting point.

Drawing of prompt, “Draw a Person” - Title of the assignment and assignment problem to solve statement

This drawing is in the stage of drawing schematic because the main shape of the body is drawn. However, the person's hands and feet are not drawn.

Vase Face & Monster Vase Face - Title of the assignment and assignment problem to solve statement

From this assignment I learned that it is very hard to draw a reflection of an image. A lot of my curves and the angles of my slopes are off.

Upside Down Drawing - Title of the assignment and assignment problem to solve statement

What I learned from drawing the minion upside down was how to picture it as just lines and shapes rather than an object. I found it to be a lot easier to draw using my right brain.

Blind Contour & Contour Line Drawing of Hand - Titles of the assignments and assignment problems to solve statement

From this assignment I learned how to look at drawing abstractly. The hand I drew blindly still looks like a hand with a few deformities.

5 contour line drawings of objects from observation- Title of the assignment and assignment problem to solve statement

This assignment has taught me how to view contour lines. Instead of foucusing on shadowing I found it to be easier to draw physical lines.

Blotted Contour Line Drawing – Title of the assignment and assignment problem to solve statement

This projects was more for fun, but I found the end result interesting because I used too much ink. From this, I learned how to fix mistakes and make them into something more silly.

Negative Space of a Ram - Title of the assignment and assignment problem to solve statement

I also found that viewing pictures as negative space was just as easy as viewing pictures as lines and shapes. I made negative space one of my strategies for drawing.

Skeleton Drawing with Sharpie

Skeleton Tracing on ipad - Title of the assignment and assignment problem to solve statement
Skelton Drawing with Sharpie – Title of the assignment and assignment problem to solve statement

This was my first personal drawing assignment; from this I learned that I am a very slow drawer. I now know that I need to work on my proportions, placement and angles of slopes.

1st Quarter Sketchbook Assignments": Include the problem to solve before each sketchbook assignment and any assignment writing requirements after the image.

ipad Insert – Assignment Title and Problem to Solve

Problem to Solve: Use the template paper provided to design an original "your name" artwork to be displayed in your ipad case.

When I was designing the back of my iPad, I was very aumused and focused. I wanted to make a simple but visually appealing design for my classmates to view.

Exploration of Procreate Through Transforming a Selfie

Problem to Solve: Explore the Procreate app by transforming your selfie into a unique and visually interesting image.

It was amusing to play around and learn how to navigate Procreate. Before doing this project I didn't understand the tools but I have come to love this app.

My Artful Image: Emphasis and Visual Movement – Assignment Title and Problem to Solve

Problem to solve: Design and create an image that uses visual movement to guide viewer’s attention to your emphasis of a chosen image.

Originally I did not know what I wanted to do for my emphasis. After I figured that out I had a hard time drawing the visual movement patterns. In the end I drew basic patterns, but I know I could have done better.

Scale and Proportion – Assignment Title and Problem to Solve

Problem to solve: Create a conceptually meaningful composition by using Procreate to transform the SCALE of chosen object(s). The change in SCALE needs to change the meaning or story of the image.

This was one of my favorite sketch books, mainly because I made it more silly than sincere. This image is based on irony because usually ticks are on mammals. I learned how to use the eraser tool to cut out images from their backgrounds and place them on top of other images.

All Things that Flower - Assignment Title and Problem to Solve

Problem to Solve: Design a unique and creative composition relating to the theme, "All Things that Flower". Your artwork will be submitted into an art competition at the Tom Ridge Center.

This was a very general sketch book. My drawing was a flower but had a child on a swing. This represented that children are pure and still growing.

Negative Space: Active Transformation– Assignment Title and Problem to Solve

Problem to Solve: Activate the negative space by transforming it into part of the positive space. Find your own unique way of solving this problem.

My sketch book for negative space was more meaningful than my other drawings. It represents that when a mother smokes so is her baby.

"O" Design – Assignment Title and Problem to Solve

Problem to Solve: Invest an hour of “invest”igation into what you can transform this “O” design into while creating CONTRAST and BALANCE in your composition. I want to see how far you can push the design while maintaining the existence of the “O” form. What can you come up with? Surprise us all.

When I was transforming the "O" design I wasn't sure what I wanted to do. At the time I was eating a Girl Scout cookie and I let my hunger do the work for me.

Inspirational Icon

Title of the assignment and assignment problem to solve statement

Problem to Solve: Pay homage to an inspirational icon of your choice by transforming a photograph into a segmented portrait with colored pencil.

Denice Frohman

Denice Frohman is not widely known, but I chose her as my inspirational icon. Denice is a slam poet who writes about equality mainly among the races and the LGBT community. Her poems’ dictations range from comical to emotionally charged tones to grab her audience’s attention and make her statements clear. Denice Frohman’s name may be unknown, but for many, including myself, it has given a voice to the voiceless.

-Lucia Chiapa

I would consider this drawing to be one of my first big projects in art. This piece challenged me to find the proper placement on the grid. I learned that I am a very slow drawer, but I am happy with the results.

Prospective activities

Problem to Solve: Practice the rules of linear perspective by following the verbal directions on how to draw boxes in both 1 and 2-point perpective.

Problem to Solve: Visually identify how the rules of perspective function in our every day environment by labeling the orthogonal lines, vanishing point, and horizon line.

This activity was simple, but it helped me understand perspective. Before this assignment, I did not know how two point perspective was set up. Now I know how different angles correspond with each other.

Geometric Object Graphite Value Drawing with Zinger

Title of the assignment (“Geometric Object Graphite Value Drawing with Zinger”) and assignment problem to solve statement

Problem to Solve: Apply your knowledge and skills of creating proportion, perspective, value range, hard edges, soft edges, and value gradations to create an illusion of a three-dimensional environment on a two-dimensional surface.

Drawing these still lives was one of the most frustrating projects this semester. I struggled with making values dark enough and putting them in the right place. Despite this, I am very proud of the results and learned I have good technique with pencils.

“You as Who?” Self Portrait

Title of the assignment and assignment problem to solve statement

Drawing Problem to Solve: Apply your knowledge and skills of drawing to create a realistic self-portrait of you imitating a chosen individual. You are in charge of choosing someone to imitate, preparing your props and facial expressions for the camera, and executing a unique artwork.

The previous project stressed me out more than it needs. However, while doing this drawing I learned to enjoy drawing and appreciate my abilities.

"2nd Quarter Sketchbook Assignments": Include the problem to solve before each sketchbook assignment and any assignment writing requirements after the image.

Social Comment for Public View – Assignment Title and Problem to Solve

Problem to Solve: Pick a social cause that you feel strongly about and design an image to communicate your position on the issue. This is an opinion piece; it should express a view and try to persuade the audience (our class). Some possible ideas are: Anti-war, Patriotism, Hunger, Environment, Abortion, Ethnic tolerance, Literacy, Anti-smoking, Freedom of speech, Voter apathy, Recycling. You may also pick your own.

With this sketchbook I tried to express that beauty standards are not ideal or acceptable. Beauty should be classified by the positive view point of all body types.

Bully Ball – Assignment Title and Problem to Solve

Problem to Solve: Use the clues in this paragraph to help you draw your own interpretation of the story within one image/page.

I loved this sketchbook because it was interesting to see how people pictured the description. I did have trouble attempting to fit all the details in one drawing, yet I still had fun drawing it.

Strange Combos – Assignment Title and Problem to Solve

Problem to Solve: Create a dynamic composition by making the combination of that noun, verb, and adjective your emphasis.

This was my favorite sketchbook this quarter. The words I got were Eiffel Tower, fluffy and kissing. My character ended up being very silly.

Before and After - Assignment Title and Problem to Solve

Problem to solve: Extend the story line of a famous artwork by designing a scene which occurred before and a scene which occurred after your chosen artwork. (You can display this as a vertical orientation, like the example, or a horizonal orientation, like a comic strip)

When I began to draw this assignment I did not know what I wanted to cause the scream to scream. I decided to ass humor and made him into Spider Man.

Cartoon Portrait – Assignment Title and Problem to Solve

Problem to Sove: Draw yourself as a cartoon character as if you were also in the TV show, movie, etc. Draw yourself in the same style as the animator did by repeating his/her visual schemas. (Example: Phineas has a triangle head, so draw your head in the shape of a triangle)

I recreated myself into the style of Clarence because I can relate to the show. Clarence and his friends are always going on silly immature adventures simular to my group of friends.

Home – Assignment Title and Problem to Solve

Problem to Solve: With whom, where, or with what do you feel most at "home"? Photomontage (artistically collage) at least 5 images of persons, places, or things which are reflections of your definition of your "home".

This last assignment made me think of what I consider home. I strongly believe that home is an environment where you are around the people you love.
