SUPERINTENDENT'S CORNER

Dear Dollarway Family,

Spring is upon us! As the semester progresses our teachers and staff continue to work diligently to teach our students to become better readers & thinkers. We are so blessed to have the benefit of education as an avenue for changing lives, addressing poverty, closing achievement gaps, as well as a way to challenge our students to recognize and live up to their full potential. Now as we prepare to go into spring break, enjoy time relaxing with family. Below the March Events Calendar we've included a link for some great spring break tips & ideas for you and your family. It is a privilege to serve the Dollarway School District, thank you for supporting us as we continue our mission to Collaborate, Educate, Graduate…The Whole Child.

PROMOTING HEALTY SMILES FOR LIFE

Community Health Promotion Specialist, Rosemary Withers (pictured right) from ARESC (Arkansas River Education Service Cooperative) conducted an oral health workshop for JMES students. She shared with students about proper oral care and how often they should brush their teeth. Thanks to JMES Nurse, Kristine Brooks, R.N., and her team for arranging this event.

MAGIC SHOW FUN...ABRA-CADABRA!!!

To celebrate Black History Month, JMES hosted Tommy Terrific’s Wacky Magic Show. The show was a unique blend of laugh-out-loud comedy coupled with sensational magic, all combined with an educational approach and focus that is all about having fun with books. The focus during the JMES show, was on the musician, Louis Armstrong and his accomplishments-during black history month. A great time was had by all!!!

Parents and students and were excited to visit with teachers to receive their child's progress reports. Staff did a great job in helping parents feel welcome and keeping things organized.

RMMS HONORS LIVING LEGACY

Mr. Shauwn D. Howell Sr., Fire Chief for Pine Bluff Fire & Emergency Services spoke to students at RMMS during their "Living Legacy" Black History Program. He encouraged the students to make decisions that lead to successful outcomes, and answered many questions posed by students. RMMS students Amiya Gurndy and Jaliyah Gary introduced Chief Howell (pictured left), and Amora Pryor performed an interpretive dance. Many members of the community attended the event to show their support and appreciation. At the end of the program, RMMS Dean of Students, Booker Mays presented Chief Howell with a certificate in honor of him being recognized as a member of Dollarway's Living Legacy. Chief Howell is a 1986 graduate of Dollarway and we were honored to have him. We would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge RMMS staff, Vernice Meadows-Math/Literacy Facilitator, James Copeland-Social Studies Teacher, Dedrick Cross-History Teacher for their vision in coordinating this event and to all of our Dollarway Community Alumni, that are having a positive impact in our city, and remind us of all the great things and success stories that are here in Pine Bluff.

2018-2019 DREAM TEAM

Simmons Bank and Deltaplex News selected their first annual Simmons Bank-Deltaplex Radio Football Dream Team members from several Arkansas High Schools. Students selected from Dollarway were: Senior Football Player, Kavareous Lowe; Senior Cheerleader, Kayla Viera; Junior Football Player, Terrance Brown. The students were recognized as being the best student athletes at their school possessing the qualities of teamwork, sportsmanship, the pursuit of excellence and working hard to pursue their dreams. These students as well as others from the area were also honored at an awards ceremony and banquet at the Pine Bluff Country Club in February (See Pics Below).

PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES

Below: DHS staff welcomed parents for the big night. Parents and students took time to complete paperwork and provide necessary updates. Teachers patiently waited as parents sought them out. PTO volunteers assisted with distributing info about parental involvement & family engagement. NATIONAL SCHOOL BREAKFAST WEEK

March 4th-8th was National School Breakfast Week. The purpose of NSBW is to encourage more families to take advantage of the healthy choices available for school breakfast. A BIG SHOUT OUT to Food Services Director, Mrs. Gammel and her incredible team of Nutrition Services/Cafeteria Staff for making it a great week--Pictured below are DHS students that won "Guess How Many" game that involved students guess the number of nutritious goodies in a package. YUMMY!!!
