Kev Minney Take Comfort Here

'OUTSTANDING' - BBC RADIO 6 MUSIC

Born and raised in Northampton, UK, Kev Minney is a singer-songwriter with a unique voice and virtuoso guitar skills. His songs emanate straight from the heart, evoking emotion, that brings us stories of tenderness, grit, hope and authenticity. He’s isn’t a person to follow trends, and that has led him to create his own artistic path.

Before he began singing, Kev struggled with a severe stutter, a challenge that he has gradually overcome by firing up the gumption to get on stage and perform hundreds of times. He highlights the story in his poignant single entitled, 'It Doesn't Bother Me'.

Kev’s music brings the rawness of a working-class guy, but the sensitivity of an artist. Throughout the whole album we get a sense of his drive and passion that comes from a lifetime of overcoming the limits of his background. He is strongly influenced by songwriters including Neil Young, Nick Drake, Jackson C Frank along with more modern-day artists such as Radiohead and Nick Cave.

Since his beginnings in 2015, where he recorded his first Ep with Kenny Siegal in New York (Beirut, Langehorn Slim) Kev has produced another two ten track albums; 'Stories of the Sky' released in 2017 and ‘Modern Stories’, released in 2020 both produced by Mercury-nominated Jag Jago in Brighton.

Both albums have stacked up reviews from Guitarist Magazine and Acoustic Magazine and Kev has gained a reputation for creating 'outstanding' and 'beautiful, dense and hypnotic' records and as an artist 'with a very promising career'. Multiple tracks from both albums have had airplay on several BBC Radio stations. His songs achieved hundreds of thousands of streams and plays on Spotify and YouTube and he has extensively toured the UK and Europe playing some of it's best underground venues.

Now in 2022, he is ready to release and tour 'his best work to date' his third album 'Take Comfort Here'.

Take Comfort Here

Kev's third album 'Take Comfort Here' was co-produced by himself and Ben Weedon – Ben was also the arranger for the album. The album was mixed by Oliver Baldwin (PJ Harvery, Aldous Harding). Kev wrote the majority of the song's during the covid pandemic, which is highlighted in two of four singles 'Freedom' and 'The Seasons'. His first single 'It Doesn't Bother Me' was written shortly before this time and was arranged by Andrew Stuart-Buttle (Lucy Rose), and the second single 'Northampton' was co-arranged with Ben and Andy. The album was mastered by Pete Maher (U2, The Killers).

'I wanted this album to be completely honest with how I feel and how to not overly think or care as much about what I create, I wanted the music to be totally free, musically and lyrically, and to be limitless, everything had to be genuine and written from the heart'

4 singles from the album 'Take Comfort Here'

Single 1 - It Doesn't Bother Me - October 21st, 2022

'It doesn't bother me' is a song about Kev's journey in living with a stutter. In the first verse we begin the song with Kev's intimate and stripped back guitar, which delicately draws the listener in and directs their attention onto what he has to say. With his soft and light vocal floating above the music, he speaks of his struggles to voice his opinions in a world where he is limited by his ability to speak. However, within this we hear a characteristic optimism, that in the end, he will find what he's looking for.

Single 2 - Northampton - Feb 2023

This song is about Kev's home town, Northampton. Just like a lot of UK towns and cities Northampton is run-down and underfunded. He wrote this song to highlight what it is like to growing up in Northampton and how often it feels that these places are neglected and the last to be invested in. Kev point's out that there is a message in this song, and that is ‘we’ve got something to say’ which often never gets heard.

Single 3 - Freedom - March 2023

We’re living in a time where you’ll get shot down for having an opinion. We have forgotten how to disagree with someone without causing outrage and we have lost the art of debate that leads to a healthier society. We have lost our nerve to think for ourselves, speak for ourselves and be ourselves. We have lost our Freedom.

Single 4 - The Seasons - April 2023

A song reflecting on the year of 2020. Each verse which represents each season of that year, that reminds us of what the nation went through during the covid pandemic. The song has a classical feel which is highlighted by the wonderful string arrangement. Kev's aim for this song was that each season flowed into the other blending the lighter and darker elements of that year.
