The Naturals By, Jennifer Lynn barnes

Jennifer Lynn Barnes was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She graduated high school in 2002. She loved to write. In her freshman year of college when she was only 19, she got her first book published. Barnes went to Yale University to study the brain and thought processes in 2006. She accepted an offer to go study and work in Cambridge for a year.
The Naturals is a book filled with mystery, action, and suspense. It even has a little bit of romance.
Cassie is new to the Naturals program. She shares a house with Sloan, Michael, Dean, Leah and Judd. Her mentors, Briggs and Locke, get a new case. They come to a brick wall, and the teens begin to help. The connection begins and it links to Cassie's mother case. When she gets a gift from the suspect things begin to heat up.
THE PRIMARY CONFLICT IN THE BOOK IS THE NEW CASE THAT COMES TO THE TEAM. THE WOMEN MURDERED STRONGLY RESEMBLE CASSIE'S MOTHER. THE HAVE RED HAIR, AND ARE FORTUNE TELLERS. BRIGGS BELIEVES IT IS JUST THE FACT THAT CASSIE WANTS TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO HER MOTHER, WHO WAS MURDERED 5 YEARS AGO. CASSIE SUDDENLY RECEIVES A PACKAGE FROM THE KILLER. THE PERPETRATOR CLAIMS CASSIE IS HIS NEW OBSESSION. CASSIE AND DEAN DISCOVER THE KILLER WORKS FOR THE FBI. THEY TAKE THE GUNS FROM THE SAFE, AND FLEE TO THE SAFEHOUSE. ONCE THEY ARRIVE, THEY SEE MICHAEL THERE. THEY FIRST THINK IT IS HIM, BUT HE WAS ACTUALLY THERE TO SAVE CASSIE FROM DEAN. SHOTS FIRED. MICHAEL IS WOUNDED. THE KILLER EMERGES FROM THE SHADOWS AND IT'S LOCKE. SHE KNOCKS DEAN OUT. LOCKE TELLS CASSIE THAT SHE IS HER AUNT. LOCKE HAD WENT TO KILL HER MOTHER 5 YEARS AGO, BUT SOMEONE HAD ALREADY DONE IT. THE CONFLICT IS RESOLVED WHEN MICHAEL RECOVERS JUST ENOUGH TO SHOOT LOCKE AND KILL HER. CASSIE, MICHAEL, AND DEAN SURVIVE. THE UNDERLYING MYSTERY STILL STANDS, WHAT HAPPENED TO CASSIE'S MOTHER IF LOCKE DID NOT KILL HER?
The theme of the book is, while struggles may come to stop you, do not let that get in the way of something you want to do. Cassie's mother died, she barely knows her father, and she just watched her aunt get shot in the head. However, she still does what she loves, profiling people, and is still in the program.
Main Characters: Cassie has red hair, pale skin, and a natural instinct to profile. The profiling teen who is new to the program and is involved in the new case. She is constantly reminded of the trauma she faced as a child, her mother's murderous disappearance. She has a love triangle going on between Michael and Dean.
Dean is also another teen with the natural ability to profile. He has a muscular build, dark hair, and piercing green eyes. He always looks angry, but inside, he has a soft heart. His father was a serial killer, so he is always on guard, and is, in fact, scared of what he might become. He is also in love with Cassie.
Michael is a veteran to the program, who can read people's emotions better than they can. He changes his look everyday, so that people can't see the real him. He is outgoing, athletic, and full of hope. He falls for Cassie as soon as he sees her. He is the one that keeps Cassie going, even when she is troubled by the case.
Lacey Locke was a special agent assigned to work with the naturals program. She was Cassie and Dean's mentor. She had bright red hair, and flawless skin. She is Cassie's aunt on her mother's side, she also happens to be a psychopathic killer.

"I want to see to it that you have the right influences, that your gift is molded into something extraordinary, something that you can use to do an incredible amount of good in this world." (pg.29) This quote from the book, is Agent Briggs talking to Cassie. He is telling her the purpose of the program. This is important because it tells us, the readers, what the program is all about, helping people.

"I'm saying the killer has a real specific type: people who look like my mother." (pg. 174) At this point in the story, the conflict had just been introduced, the new case. Cassie has made a connection, connecting the murdered women to her mother, which shows how Cassie has progressed, from a little girl scared to talk about it, to a young teen willing to take action.

Vocab Words: 1. Kleptomania- someone who has pathological lying tendencies. 2. domain- a territory owned by a landowner 3. tentative- unsure or uncertain of something 4. obligingly- eager to offer help 5. cold case- a case that a law enforcement officer could not solve.

My recommendation of the book is that you must read it. It is a suspenseful plot, that leaves you wondering what is gonna happen next. You are constantly wondering if they will catch the killer. You are torn between who Cassie will choose, Dean or Michael.

3 words to describe the book are exciting, romantic, and mysterious.
