I am thrilled about this week’s readings. I just joined a Commuter and Transfer student committee for Welcome Week, which is the week of orientation for all incoming students. I am excited to refer to these readings as we work on creating a meaningful and informational orientation for them. Drexel also has a specific department for commuter students, of which many are transfer students. There is no specific department for transfer students but they are served either through that office or in their academic departments. In the College of Engineering, there is a director for transfer students for the freshmen and sophomore students. Transfer students also have their own university 101 courses. Since I am the scheduler for freshmen and sophomore students I see firsthand the advocacy of the director of transfer students in making sure there are courses available for students during off-terms. This has given me insight into how easy it is for transfer students to go off track without support.
As the program manager for the engineering tutoring center, I hire and train tutors, but historically we have hired few transfer students, but I wanted to change that around as I think they have a lot to offer to their community. I hired two new transfer students last term and they are phenomenal. I intend to work with director of transfer students to discuss what role the tutoring center has in integrating tutors into the college of engineering.
