Catapult Launch 10th Grade HL Math Project

This year’s 10th grade HL Math students took on the role of medieval villagers whose homeland was under siege over territorial boundaries.

Students were asked to design and construct a launching device of their choice suitable for firing M & M’s.

Designs included catapults, trebuchets, and ballistas.

After compiling data from test launches, students calculated the quadratic function representing the trajectory of their M & M’s.

With this equation and the distance formula, students predicted the best launch location to defend their homeland in a mock battle of army men.
